Villa FA Cup Draw 3rd Rd

If we're going to win the competition we're going to have to beat a team as good and probably better than Man Utd anyway, so might as well do it in the third round, start as we mean to go on. But would have been nice to get a draw where we could have played a few of the youngsters.

What a crap draw. If you exclude the league cup run in 2020 we have had 1 home draw in the last 8 league or fa cup matches.

What is the away allocation at old trafford for the fa cup? It should be 15% of the capacity should it not?

Anything between 8 and 10k

What is it without excluding 2020?

Any stats on how many times we’ve drawn Man Utd in the third round?

8 times. 1906, 1908, 1948, 2002, 2004, 2007, 2008, 2022

Also twice in 2nd round (1911 and 1920), one 4th round (1963), one quarter-final (1977) and a final (1957)

13 games in total. We won 2 of them (obvs 1957, plus 1920)

Exactly. No fear whatsoever and Gerrard will have them right up for it .

We’ve beat them there already this year, we can do it again.

Exactly and Gerrard will have had more impact on the lads come then, I really want us to take this seriously. When I was a kid, I'd get a Guinness book of records from my aunt for Christmas and every year straight to the football section to see who had won the most F.A. cups, it was years before we lost that record and we never won the ******* since ffs, desperate for us to win this before I pop me cloggs.

1977, that Brian Little goal. I thought we were going to win it that year

Also bear in mind that something like 9 out of our last 10 PL seasons have opened with away games.

Statistically this must be up there for a ridiculous anomaly. 5 times in 20 years in a pot of 61 other teams. Surely the odds are astronomical of that happening?! We get them 25% of the time...

If anyone else has studied maths more recently than 15 years ago please come in and correct me.

Using an online binomial distribution calculator, the chances of a 1/63 event happening 5 or more times over 20 trials is 0.00128%, or roughly 1 in 78000.

So there is a 1 in 78000 chance of drawing the same team 5 times in a 20 year period, and the team that we've done it with just happens to have been the biggest club in the world for most of that time.

Fantastic stats. And 1920 was an FA Cup winning year for us too. So, essentially, every time we beat Man United in the FA Cup... we win the FA Cup. Bring it on!

And there’s 1999 or 2000 was it? when We ended up playing Darlington, who replaced them in the draw because of that world club championship thing.
