meregreen
Certainly think that simply being Gerrard will possibly impress any potential signings into signing. Having a football legend like that on the opposite side of the table, sometimes swings a signing that might not have made it over the line otherwise. Its at least fairly recent as of the last two years as there are face masks but you are right this could have been any time. Although it probably is from today given all the other news. At the same time, there's a lot of people who are hardcore Smith in as well and to this day are showcasing their colours. Not surprising really, people are commited to their agendas. Oh I agree and I’m definitely in the latter category parading my colours and agenda. That aside I really thought if they did get rid of Smith, which I knew was a possibility, I thought they would go for it and get in somebody good, hopefully next level. That’s what’s so disappointing about the Gerrard rumours.

However having done a deep dive on him yesterday, I am intrigued by a few things. His coaching team, in particular Beale, seem like impressive individuals. I always liked Gary Mac when he was here too, and he would come back with another 10 years experience behind him. I like the style of football they employ. 3 man midfield, dynamic front 3 built around a focal point, cutting off passing lanes and pressing the defensive line. There's continuity there which I feel is important and I think it suits our squad. He has developed it over a number of years, sticking by his principles in the face of adversity culminating in the Invincibles season and their relative competitiveness in Europe. He speaks a good game, I like the cut of his job. He doesn't throw players under the bus as others have suggested, but he is willing to call a spade a spade. The aforementioned Invincibles season. I don't think you can underestimate the mentality it takes to go an entire 38 game season unbeaten, even in Scotland. It is a remarkable achievement, even if people seem desperate to diminish it. That's all I have for now. I would urge you to go and watch some of his interviews, read about him and his team, immerse yourself. I think he has been poorly represented in this thread. I found this post refreshing. I've been on a similar journey, researching all the information I could find on Gerrard since he finished his playing career which was very impressive. I have to say that I don't recognise the SG that some of you guys are portraying. Have you bothered to read the same info and articles and watched the videos, or have you immediately decided that he's rubbish and that no amount of information will change your minds? Another aspect that needs discussing as "don't-do-it-doug" has briefly mentioned is the coaching ability of Beale. If he's as outstandingly good as people who know him and have worked with him say, then he adds to Gerrard's management skills immeasurably. I also like Gary Mac both as a person and football man. This thread has become a less pleasant and interesting place to be this morning as the tone becomes angrier. We still don't know whether Gerrard is the main target or whether NSWE/Purslow are happy to allow the media to run with his name while they go on silently about their business. I'm also not advocating Gerrard as our next manager, but all the reading and watching I've done over the last couple of days has shown me why he may be of interest to AVFC. There's no real mention of my own favourite (Potter) and this doesn't particularly surprise me due to his lower profile, but there are some good prospects on what we believe to be the shortlist, so I'm happy to wait for a final decision to be made.
