The one im thinking of vs Newcastle wasn't direct. But basically was.

Yeah someone touched it back to him but he still had to curl it round their wall, had a cracking view of it from upper Trinity.

Coutinho was very unlucky not to score one v Brighton last season, their keeper basically saved it on the goalline.

Would've thought El Ghazi would've scored a FK at some point given he had a reasonable strike on him from distance and penalties.

We've scored 2 goals direct from corners in 8 games this season but haven't scored a direct free kick in 7 years?

As for him... I'm not overly fussed by him, think training to defend set pieces would be more important and we never seem to do that, attacking wise he can cook up anything he likes, the cleverest set piece routine you've ever seen and if the ball in is shit it's all for nothing

He is a bit of a scape goat though, he's just a coach, we have a lot of them, we probably need more of them, his significance to the team isn't as high as its made out to be, we do need a set piece coach again I think more for defending, part of it will be scouting too, almost like NFL we should have a guy watching tape of opposition teams and knowing what they're all about and then relaying that info to the players, I don't think that exists in football but it should it's common sense

I can’t find the numbers at the minute but I’m sure our goals scored and goals conceded were better before the year we signed him. The main difference was we were doing fancy routines at every set piece. Don’t see him as much now but he was very involved in the sidelines when Dean was in charge and now it makes you wonder what he’s actually doing

He’s still v involved on the sidelines, maybe you just haven’t noticed him.

Fair, doing what though

Erm shouting a bit and celebrating a goal with Gerrard from what I’ve seen.

Tbf  the training ground is where he’s going to be most busy. If he’s having to be front and centre too much on match days I would think they haven’t prepared properly.

saw this thread has been bumped so folks are back to the "what does this guy actually do?" argument

he's a set piece specialist, but it's not ALL that he does.

Another reason why I think Ward Prowse would have been a perfect fit for us.

Don't worry he'd either break his leg in the first 10 mins or regress to being some Tonev type character and never hit the target with a free kick again

Haha, you are probably right there. Ask Luc Nilis, the most talented player Villa had ever seen. For about 20 minutes.

No one really scores free kicks anymore. They all get skied or hit the wall. I’m not really sure what happened.

They’ve got to be perfect to go in because the keepers are so much more agile than they used to be. To achieve that perfection the margin for error is very very small. You’ve got to get it over the wall and down under the crossbar with enough power to beat a keeper who doesn’t have concrete boots on like they did 15 years ago.

Makes sense. It’s why I don’t get too upset when we constantly bollocks our free kicks because there isn’t a single team out there who does anything with them anymore.

So is that fact about our last FK scored true? I know the Hourihane one VS Newcastle wasn't technically direct but surely he bagged one in The Championship?

If the stat is PL only then it's not quite as shocking considering we had three years out of the league.

He definitely scored against Forsst and Blackburn in the championship, not sure if there were any others though.
