Birmingham's under-pressure stars are facing a fans backlash after a group of them went on a late-night bender ahead of their crunch Premier League survival clash.

The Carling Cup winners are in grave danger of the drop after a dismal 2-0 loss at home to Fulham left them one place above the drop zone, and that only on goal difference.

With a crunch trip to Spurs to come on Sunday, Alex McLeish’s squad were in high spirits at the club’s end of season awards bash on Monday evening.

They were allowed to drink, but about eight senior stars, including keeper and player of the year Ben Foster, upset McLeish and fans by staying out boozing until 4am.

Reserve team keeper Colin Doyle’s wife Becky blew the whistle as she tweeted: “P***** off with my husband getting in at 4am with Fossy and waking me up. Celebrate next week when you’re safe. Have some respect.”

Blues season ticket holder Jamie Harper replied on Twitter: “I wouldn’t mind if we were safe and playing well but we are not. We are fighting for our lives and we are s***. It’s a joke.

“Footballers are f****** pathetic. Biggest game of the season Sunday and they are all getting p*****. Makes me sick.”

Becky Doyle’s post was later removed, but she still joked: “golf bag and golf clubs still for sale, comes with one hung-over husband”.

The club’s awards bash - called The Big City Event - was held at the NIA in Birmingham.

A spokesperson said: “The Big City Event was a chance for everybody associated with the football club to reflect on a historic season.

“However, the importance of this weekend’s final fixture of the Barclays Premier League was stressed throughout the evening.

“Both the players and the management staff are fully focused on Sunday’s hugely-important fixture at White Hart Lane.”

Birmingham's under-pressure stars
The word "stars" is used very loosely there.
Perhaps it should read "Both of Birmingham's under-pressure stars".
