What a strange and wonderful thing football is. Sheffield United, the greatest promoted team in the history of football ever, are only 8 points above us.

Probably the most important goal of the season. Excellent, mature performance in front of an understandably nervous VP to turn around a losing position against a confident team without a striker. Incredible.

Just walked from VP to the ERD in record time.

Some massive moments from a lot of players tonight:

• Reina: brilliant all night with his distribution, which really fits Dean's style, made a good double save to keep us in the game, and was class on the final play
• Guilbert: some immense slide tackles. He loves a slide tackle, but when you do it that well, why not? Took the fight to Watford.
• Konsa: looks well suited to the back 3. Makes defensive mistakes, but he is very good on the ball, and allowing him to drive forward makes him twice the player
• Mings: not one of his best games, but a huge block with his head early on which probably left him a bit dazed, and some very nice long switch passes
• Hause: a few very, very good tackles and headers mixed in with some loose passes, but he showed muscle and discipline against Watford's tactics.
• Targett: had nobody to cross to for most of the game, but he got in good positions and looked like a natural wingback. He's also very impressive in the air, and nearly scored a great goal off a Guilbert cross.
• Nakamba: his best performance in a Villa shirt. This was a Kante-esque performance, constantly pressing, nicking the ball, powering into 50-50s, simple passes. Everything you want from this kind of player.
• Drinkwater: off the pace, but clearly improving with every game, and his passing was very good at times. Would prefer to have McGinn in there, but I think holding Luiz back was the right call, as he seems to be much more dangerous against tired legs.
• Trezeguet: always puts in a good shift. End quality lacking again, but he didn't have anyone to aim for in the box. Created a decent long range chance for himself.
• Grealish: the usual, no analysis required, does it every week
• El Ghazi: actually played pretty well, but struggled to hold up the ball, and looked much better out wide
• Douglas Luiz (sub for Drinkwater): **** GET IN DOUGLAS, that leap into the crowd was the moment we turned our season around, you could feel it.
• Vassilev (sub for Trezeguet): very impressive, much better at holding up the ball than El Ghazi. Could have done better with a header off a Targett cross, but generally made a nuisance of himself and made good runs.
