Douglas Luiz

Luiz would look fine in a possession based team, who pack midfield.

We play with 3 in midfield and concede possession for athleticism, which Doug doesn't really have.

He's very neat and tidy on the ball, but when it comes getting around, he's not that player.

It's on the management team to find where he fits, but at the moment, that isn't happening.

He'd be great at Arsenal or Chelsea/City I'd suspect.

I’ve seen absolutely nothing to indicate this to be the case. He’s been pants for quite a long time now.

Agreed.  Give Luiz the middle of the park without defensive responsibilities and freedom to ping the ball round the pitch and he'd look very good.

It isn't like he's a bad player.  But when he's the last line of defence, for me, he's the one that makes the most daft mistakes on the ball trying to be clever.  He isn't quick enough to recover sufficiently and he lacks physical dominance to bully players off the ball.  So for the player we want him to be, it doesn't work well.

Unless we pull Cash and Digne right back and stop playing with wing backs allowing the midfield to be non-defensive as such.  I can't see that happening, though.  Digne has been bought specifically for his attacking ability.

Its no coincidence better teams than us are interested in him

He's got a rotten job in that position at the moment and he's doing ok.

I do think I've seen signs of him reigning it in though. If that carries on and he still won't sign a new contract I'd drop him totally from the squad before the end of march.

Can't have someone worried about getting injured coasting when they're going to leave anyway. Not enough benefit for us long term.

I don't think his value will be too badly hit for not playing for two months if he's fit.

He’s a tidy player but he isn’t quick enough to ever be a world beater.  Still think he might stay anyway.

He would do well in a team where he can emulate Henderson‘s role at Liverpool with a specialist DM alongside him like Fabinho to win the ball. Unfortunately with us he’s paired alongside McGinn in midfield who is a quality player but his energy levels and willingness to chase are key to his game and as such he can’t be tied down a disciplined defensive role to support Luiz, which leaves Luiz’s weaknesses in the middle exposed.

based on what? The fact he is a one man midfield most of the times. On Sunday he made 2 tackles, 2 interceptions, had our highest passing stats and our only shot on target

Check out his stats against Leeds, appalling. Lost possession 11 times, lowest pass completion of any of our midfielders. Basing anything on stats alone can be unreliable. I use my eyes, and his performances have been poor for some time. Perhaps he wants away, and has simply lost interest. I think Gerrard will drop him .

I think the problem here is more looking at stats over a single game instead of across the season.

Luiz is not a Gerrard player ..... he's slow, lazy, can't tackle and neither supports the defence nor the forwards. IMHO he hasn't had a decent run of form here for a very long time. Be absolutely delighted to lose him, especially if some mugs are prepared to pay £30M !!!

Very much agree stats can be misleading. Which ones are you looking at? Whoscored says Luiz had Villa’s third highest pass completion against Leeds and highest vs Newcastle. Losing possession 11 times is pretty standard, McGinn had 10 and Coutinho 12. Digne lost it 26 times vs Newcastle.

It was a match report. One of the Nationals, can’t remember which. I agree, stats can be misleading. I always base my opinions on what I actually observe. I just don’t think this guy has been playing well for some time. I think he may well have had his head turned. Gerrard will I think be looking at possible changes, he’s definitely at risk. If someone is willing to pay a decent fee for him, I won’t be too disappointed to see him go.

I think he's been playing reasonably over the last few games - he does a really good job of taking the ball off the keeper and moving it on; getting us out and starting things off - he's doing that from a position that's a bit too deep the moment I think and we're having Coutinho and Buendia having to come to the half way line to pick the ball up - we'd want them twenty yards up the field really, but I'm not sure that's down to Luiz and his ability to take a ball under pressure from the keeper or back four, control it and then find a claret and blue shirt shouldn't be underestimated in its importance to us. I think against Newcastle, particularly in the first half he was good defensively too.

I don't think we've got anyone else in the squad who can play the position he does anything like as well as he does - Chambers doesn't have the ability on the ball, Nakamba doesn't have the ability on the ball, we could maybe put Sanson there, but I don't see anything that Sanson does that's a difference maker in doing that.

His primary role in the team is in getting the ball and moving us over half way, secondary to that is providing some sort of cover for the centrebacks, he's doing well at the first and okay at the second.

On the evidence of my own eyes, he's nowhere near being the problem with this side and he's coming off a couple of decent performances.

I disagree, he's not doing well enough with his primary job of progressing us forward, his passing stats aren't good enough. Also we can't ignore how terrible his set pieces have been. That's before we get onto his poor defensive skills.

I've no idea how he would get on in one of the 8 roles over the course of a season. He might be better as playing progressive passes and goals from outside the box if we had that key player in Central Midfield 6 position.

I hope he signs a new contract as it will protect our asset and his value. Even if we sold hom this summer.

He had a higher pass completion % than McGinn and Buendia. He had the most presses out of our midfielders and with the highest successful pressures.
