So many people feel the need to thank him when really all he did was achieve par for the course in a time of unprecedented spending.

I enjoyed it at the time but with hindsight, how anyone can think he achieved stuff is beyond me.

Will always be a failure in my eyes...

‘Par for the course’ is by definition not failing. It is probably a good description of his time with us.

We achieved decent results but we were never exceeding expectations.

If the level of spending was not sustainable to the club then the board should have set a level of expenditure that was. It’s not the job of the manager to decide the budget.

We weren't really confident of safety until we beat West Ham away with that late winner from Gabby to be fair. We always seemed to do just enough in those years until Tim Sherwood messed everything up lol

The year we went down was because we lost whatever fragments of a quality spine we had left, Delph Vlaar and benteke all went.

With unprecedented spending I think it is a failure.

we could have boomed but because him we nearly went bust.

MON's failure wasn't performance, it was squad building. We ended up with awful players on long, expensive contracts which hamstrung us massively over the next few years and was a key reason for our relegation.

We played some scintillating football though, loved those teams.

We needed a striker and we brought Heskey. If we had had Benteke in MON's team we would have finished top 4. What really cost us was Lerner getting divorced.

Goal difference isn't used to settle teams equal on point this season btw, it's head to head record. So Brighton's goal difference is irrelevant for us.

Goal difference is used. The head to head only replaces the theoretical play off games that never happen (astronomical odds) of teams can’t be separated by points, goal difference and then goal scored.

The Premier League headline wording on this is a bit misleading though, so can understand why some people think this.

Head to head is ony taken into consideration in the event of teams being on the same amount of points, with the same goal difference and exactly the same goals for & against.

This is incredibly unlikely to happen and has never actually happened anyway but in the event that it did a play-off would previously have been used to decide who finished higher. Now it would be head to head scores and if they are still unable to be split a play-off would still happen.

It's a pointless 5th step to possibly fix something that has never happened and may not even fix it anyway

One more addition to this.  In the event that it goes to a head to head record between the 2 teams and they still can't be separated, it then goes to away goals scored in the head to head games, and only THEN they play a playoff.

Quote

If clubs still cannot be separated, the team who scored the most goals away from home in the head-to-head matches will get the highest position.

As stupid as it all is, It does actually make sense to try and do everything possible to avoid a play-off, The logistics of trying to arrange an extra game immediately after the season are a pain and you don't really want potentially the league title or a european/relegation place decided a week after the season has finished let alone if it was just an entirely pointess play-off to decide who finished 13th or 14th

Yep, I don't think it's stupid at all.  You've played 38 games.  You've played everyone twice.  That's how we'll separate you.  You will have done something anything differently to the other team and we'll award the more difficult achievement.  Playoff should always be last resort, and there are plenty of resorts before it.

Looking back I think MON's poor social skills really hurt him. He is just a difficult man regardless of his ability level.

He would have got a lot out of regular media and management* training (traditional management training IE: how to interact with people professionally).

Sadly I am sure he would have scowled at the idea, sneered then walked away. Pity because I still think there was a decent manager in there.

Cloughie could get away with being an arrogant ass know it all because he was a football prodigy. MON & Keane never understood that 99% of managers need to work at it and be willing to learn from others every day.
