Gary Thomas
Quote Aston Villa plan a move for £7million rated midfielder Nampalys Mendy Aston Villa are looking to move swiftly in their search for a new midfielder by eyeing a move for Nice star Nampalys Mendy, according to reports from the Daily Mail…..Recent reports had claimed that Villa were eyeing a surprise move for Tottenham Hotspur star Tom Carroll but manager Tim Sherwood is looking at other options as well and now according to the Daily Mail, it has been claimed that the Villans are planning a swoop for Nice star Nampalys Mendy. Despite being only 23, Mendy has garnered a lot of experience in the French Ligue 1 over the last few seasons and is regarded as one of the most promising defensive midfielders in the division. As a result, Mendy has widely been mooted to make a step up to the Premier League and Leicester City have been pursuing the midfielder. The sale of Delph means that even Villa have joined in the race for Mendy and are set to ramp up their pursuit for the £7million-rated star in the coming weeks. http://footballrepublik.com/aston-villa-plan-a-move-for-7million-rated-midfielder/

PieFacE Posted July 22, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted July 22, 2015 Looks like we wont be spending again then. Thinking we will be spending 40 mill+ this transfer window is close to insane. I think we will at least spend the Benteke, Delph, Weimann and Lowton money.

Has Riley been ousted as part of the scouting shakeup yesterday? No reason. Oi! That's not "news" yet you scamp! I haven't said anything? BOF Posted July 22, 2015 Moderator Share Posted July 22, 2015 Daz's original point is valid though. The logic that says "this one time we spent £7m on a striker and it worked out really well, therefore we can rely on it happening again to replace him" is about as sound as the other logic we use on here regarding a hesitancy to bring in Eastern European players because this one time we bought a bad one. We got very lucky with Benteke. Yes it might happen again but it would be incredibly lucky if it did. It is far more likely that we buy a mere mortal at that price. I thought the meaning behind his post was fairly obvious even though he set himself up for the 'but Benteke cost that much' retort.

We can't expect to replace Benteke with a player as good as Benteke regardless. Absolutely nobody is suggesting that is realistic. Trouble is, daz is completely incapable of reading what people have actually written and having a decent, adult debate about that.

Gary Thomas
The predictions about the specific amount we will and won’t be spend this window are futile, nobody has a clue. Clearly the pessimists have us relegated already because of that tight git Lerner, while the optimists are sitting anxiously expecting a rapid influx of players any minute now. Personally, I prefer to hope - it is so much nicer than the doom and gloom - but as always time will reveal all.

Popular Post StanBalaban
I've accepted that with Randy at the helm the best we can hope for is to finish midtable, whilst also running a real risk of being relegated. I am however going to try and put some positive specs on for a moment and take a look at the table from last season. Stoke were a bang average team. When we lost to them at Villa Park, I was gutted because we should have beaten them. They ended up with 16 more points than us. How we lost to Newcastle under Carver is a mystery too. We were "better" than the Baggies and Sunderland but they finished above us. Leicester went on a crazy run and ended up 3 places above. So, what's my point? The point is that from 8th - 18th, the quality of a lot of the teams can be separated by a cigarette paper, but confidence, circumstances, injuries and sheer luck can make all the difference. We've lost Delph. Obviously our club captain and an important midfielder he's going to be a loss. An elegant player with his jinks, twists and turns, but what was the end product? I don't want to sound revisionist, but I really think we can improve here. We struggled for goals. Even with Benteke in the team under Lambert, we weren't scoring goals. None. For ages. Tim changed things and got the tactics about right to see Benteke go on a great scoring run, and now we're going to get £32.5m in return. Benteke has surely saved our team, but under PL even he showed that he can't do everything by himself. If TIm spends that money wisely on creating more goals and chances around the team, then we don't necessarily need to do the impossible in finding another Benteke. Get a couple of good strikers, and players behind them to create chances and the goals will come. Sounds more siple than it is, of course. Some teams are seriously improving. Palace and West Ham for sure. So too are Newcastle. Some haven't really done much yet, like Leicester and Sunderland and the teams coming up will be something of an unknown quantity for now. We'll never know if our cup run affected our league form at the end of the season, but I really don't think we're as cut adrift as some may think. Tim is rightly being ruthless in cutting as much of the dross as he can. The spine has gone, but maybe that's what was needed. If Tim can get the confidence in the team, make us less reliant on one player, utilise Wilkins' knowledge then we could be alright. We're obviously going to add more players to the squad and let's hope they bring real quality with them. Whether we spend more than we raise from sales, we'll still be spending a lot compared to recent years so I'm quietly optimistic that we can be in that midtable mix. The downside under Randy is that being in that midtable mix is now viewed as an accomplishment, rather than a disappointment.
