How long would you guys give a new job before you honestly decide you don't like it and look elsewhere?

Half the time I think it's just me but I'm at that age now where I really want to find something I'm going to enjoy (to an extent) and see it as a future! I've gone from working in a factory which stressed me out big time and gave me migraines every month or so, to an outdoor job driving about on my own. Although it feels loads better being out in the fresh air all day long, I dislike the driving and 75% of the time I'm working in shit areas (I'm based in Wolverhampton - apologises for anyone who lives there :detect:), so I feel so uncomfortable during most the day.

I don't see myself wanting to stay there even though it poses opportunities down the line to work my way up. At the moment I'm on a wage that just about keeps my head above water with paying the bills.

I've got no qualifications under my belt and I've got a mortgage to pay, so I can't drop everything to go to college or anything. I understand there are part-time courses but I'm not sure what I actually want to do! Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't know your line of work or what you'd like to get into so this might not be relevant. I use Lynda.com and other similar sites which allow you to learn new skills or brush up on areas. Particularly good for software use or creation. Some of these areas are in demand if you can become skilled in them and this might be a good way to test out different areas before diving into a college course. It is always better to test - it took me a while to find something I liked doing.

If I got a job cold calling I doubt I'd make lunchtime on the first day.

My nightmare job (within reason)

Cold calling is also my nightmare job! Like shooting fish in a barrel. Although that at least sounds kind of fun.

I worked doing door-to-door sales once. I lasted one and a half days, then had a nervous breakdown. Never went back.

Thanks for this mate, what are you doing now just out of interest?

I work in animation/video production. Didn't set out to do that but got involved in loads of projects at uni and a 2012 Olympics build up programme. Gave me a good chance to practice and I actually found something I really liked doing and people who I enjoyed working with. I've gone from never considering this area as a career in 2008 to working on JLR TV ads by 2015 (sorry if that sounds like I'm being smug*).

I had a general interest in broadcast/media but by trying the different areas (newspapers/radio/tv for example) it gave me a good sense of what I definitely didn't want to do. Do you have any general areas you'd like to work in? Take money out of the equation and what would you love to be doing?

*definitely being smug

My own career is back to it's rollercoaster usual style, when I moved in the summer I gambled on a temporary role which has been extended a few times with the promise of maybe a permanent role, but now we're really approaching the end game of that and I'm having to look elsewhere to cover my arse really. It's awkward. I don't want to leave really, and it's probably in my interests not to - I'm picking up experience of wider areas, as till now I've been very specialised, but I'm still not an expert in them. And I've effectively shifted into a different role which again I'm just picking up.

But, might not have much choice about it. On the plus side I do see myself switching roles in the industry significantly in the future and this could be the opportunity to do it... And I must do something right CV wise as my phone rings off the hook every day with recruiters.

Yep, decided not to extend my contract so out on my ear.

To say I'm angry would be an exceptional understatement.

I'm giving myself a day I think to just walk away from it and then see what I want to do. My experience is all in 1 field but I'm not sure if I want to carry on doing this. But equally I don't really know what else I want to do.

Been asked by a pal of mine who's self employed but has been offer a FT role on the books, how much would you take home a week (after deductions) from £45k a year?

Im also self employed so unsure how the NI Deductions work or what % of tax is stopped.

TIA

Google "listen to the tax man" - it's a simple calculator tool where you enter things like gross salary per year/month/week, student loan - yes or no etc. and then it works out what you'd take home in your pocket every year/month/week.

Handy.

At a quick estimate, I'd say 650-700 a week
