He is such a nice, mild-mannered person - a real gentleman. His teamtalks to the youth team were very different to some of the other coaches at the time. This is really sad. I am increasingly becoming aware that getting old is no fun at all. But my most vivid memory of him is years before that when I was about 10 years old and he was sat behind me at a Villa game in the late 80s, presumably injured as he wasn't playing. I recognised him because he was one of the current players and I asked him to sign my programme for me. He then held onto it for Des Bremner to sign who was sat next to him. Unfortunately, and to my shame, I didn't know who Des Bremner was as I didn't start supporting Villa until 1987. Gordon and I then entered into a tug of war with the programme with me trying to pull it off him and him trying to give it to Des until he said "this is Des Bremner!" First time I walked in there and saw him speaking to my Dad I just stood there in a trance and could hardly get my words out. A true gent and great company and a truly brilliant footballer. When my lads rave about a good ball in a match I tell them every time they have seen nothing to the point they respond 'we know Dad' He was always asking me if I knew if there had been any any off field shenanigans, especially if we had played the Blues, he had a genuine interest Really sad news 9 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

avfc1982am Posted March 28 Share Posted March 28 (edited) Such sad sad news.....I was not only fortunate to see him play on a regs during his heyday but also very very fortunate to spend several hours with him and a few other players last year at a private gathering. What a wonderful individual, along with the others of course. Arguably the best set piece specialist with the ability to put the ball from anywhere on a sixpence, one of our greatest wingers and without doubt a Villa legend for eternity. He'll never be alone because he has some of the greatest teammates anyone could wish for and a fanbase that adore him. Best wishes our Sid. T-Dog Posted March 28 Share Posted March 28 I remember a few years back, watching a Villa game in a boozer 10 minutes away with the lads, at half time this lovely enigmatic man come and sat with us, I had to do a double take, it was only Sid. He was there to do a Q&A on the evening. He was class, a really nice bloke, and just one of the lads if I'm being honest. Fully appreciate you posted this in good faith and with the best of intentions and I respect the sentiment, but he is still alive. Deteriorating of course and I wouldn't want to underplay what he and his family will be going through, it's a very hard transition to make and I wouldn't want to speculate one way or the other over how much life he or anyone else will have left on this spinning orb - but he's not dead. I think a minute of anything before kick-off would be a bit premature and maybe a bit rough for his family and friends, not to mention Sid if he happens to tune in to any coverage of the game. Clear from what Collymore wrote that although he's getting worse, there's still an awareness there. I would say a gesture like this is best kept for a future date when it will be a lot more meaningful and even more sad tbh. Again, without speculating at all.
