mikeyp102 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Thought it's about time he had his own thread. I never really got to see him a player (his last season in the 90's I don't think he played much). I her he was a fantastic passer of the ball. So he has been in and around the coaching set up for a long time. What's his style?
smetrov Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Seen it elsewhere that he appeared 527 times for us ? - thats not correct surley ?
Popular Post Brumerican Posted April 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 16, 2014 Even now he is still the best passer of the ball at the club. 15
briny_ear Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 (edited) Seen it elsewhere that he appeared 527 times for us ? - thats not correct surley ? Haven't checked the precise figures but I think that is about right. He started playing in the first team when he was 17 and still an apprentice, and played pretty much continuously until the summer of 1983 when he broke his leg. He then went off to play for Bari for a couple of seasons but GT Mk1 bought him back in 1988 and he was a regular first teamer from then until 1991, when he went to Blackburn. He even came back after that in 1993! But that was less successful and he only played a few matches before leaving again (for Wolves, I think?) So that's how you can clock up over 500 appearances for one club. Start young and return often. Edit - sorry, he started in the first team in 1976. Meant to say that first time. Popular Post markavfc40 Posted April 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 16, 2014 He made 527 league and cup appearances for us in 3 spells. The guy was a genius and the most gifted player I have seen play for us. He made it all look so simple. He could put the ball on a 10 pence piece from 80 yards, could read a players runs and pick them out better than anyone I've ever seen and also didn't mind getting stuck in. 9
Robbie09 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Having been lucky enough to watch Sid play I think I can confidently say there will never be a better Villa player than him. 3
Butterfingers Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Was an apprentice at Villa. His dad was employed by the club as "kit man" As markavfc40 says-The most gifted player I've seen in a Villa shirt. Was just nine & a half stone when he made his debut at 17. This, back in the 70's where the game was so much more physical & proper players like Sid did not get the protection from refs that players today do. Always thought the nickname "Sid" (as in Sid Viscious) came from his demeanour and looks on the pitch but someone told me recently it came about when another youth team player (Mickey Butress) collected all the teams passports prior to a European tour & discovered Gordons middle name was "Sid" & the name stuck from then. Not sure of the authenticity of that story but it seems Mickey Butresses claim to fame (as well as playing in the 5-1 defeat of Liverpool)
smetrov Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 Brain Little still takes my accolade for the greatest villa player I have seen 1
Guest av1 Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I think I'm right in saying (maybe wrong) that one year David Platt said that his ambition for the season was to make a run that Sid didn't see. I may well have dreamt that, I'm sure someone with a better memory than me can confirm/rubbish that.

darrenm Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I saw him play once in a mid 90s return where his first touch was to try and score with a volley from his own half. Sliced it horribly but no one cared.
Popular Post kevangrealish Posted April 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 16, 2014 Him and his son are great lads. From when ive spoke to them they are down to earth people who love the club. Respect goes along way for what he has done for jack aswell. My dad knows him a lot now and finds it unbelievable considering he was as people say villa's most talented player ever and looking up to him when he was in his teens. Sounds like a superb coach who will always be a villa legend... #TeamSid 10
The_Rev Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I went to his testimonial in about 1994. It was against Blackburn. I can't even remember the score.
Popular Post villa-revolution Posted April 16, 2014 Popular Post Posted April 16, 2014 I played against `Sid` when he was playing for St George's school at 14 years of age. He was a year older than me & his passing range then was unreal. We lost 4-0 I remember the game well. Bottom Line - I remember playing against Sid - Sid doesn't remember playing against me. 11
TrinityRoadSteps Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I am struggling to think of any other player that could be put even close to Sid when it comes to being "Mr Aston Villa" The fact that he was such a effortless player and had a hand in some of the greatest parts of the clubs recent history just adds to his legacy
mikeyp102 Posted April 16, 2014 Author Posted April 16, 2014 Randomly but I always thought he was called Sid as he looked a bit like Sid James
Isa Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 I realise that I should know this but why is he referred to as Sid again?

Papillon Posted April 16, 2014 Posted April 16, 2014 We have Al Bundy as a reserve manager. I love Al Bundy, should be good.
