Will be a loan deal won't it? No point doing it this week given they're playing Man. City so he'd have been ineligible.

The report I saw earlier in the window suggested that even Phillips' loan fee would be beyond them.

Injuries or not, this isn't the same team as last year - the lack of squad depth is really costing them.

We built a base and then added quality - they've done the opposite. Partly because of the need to buy immediate starters to make a statement in Saudi, but spending the money they have now means they're struggling to add the squad depth.

Shame.

The only way Howe's style of football could work long-term is with a massive squad of players.  When his Bournemouth team were relegated they also had a big injury list.  Not a coincidence.

Even with everyone fit there's often a big gap in their midfield whenever they lose the ball high up and teams are immediately on their back four. The lack of a proper DM in their squad is looking like a glaring error.

Imagine if Howe gets the sack if we beat them.

Well they'll be in the bottom half most likely if that happens and that's not good optics in Saudi land. Howe not making end of season is far more likely now than a month back.

One thing he simply can't afford is to go out of the FA cup otherwise their season is pretty much over so I think that will take priority over our game and they might lose a few more injured given it's a 72 hour turnaround between the two fixtures.

Heard an interesting point from a Newcastle fan regarding Saudi investment. He was suggesting it might not be as high as some people think. His reasoning being, with the world cup in Saudi 10 years away, there would be huge amounts spent on getting a high league standing. Improving all aspects spending many millions getting stadia infrastructure right and bringing in many more high profile players. They really wouldn't want a world cup in there own back yard and be humiliated with a poor team.

That's not to say there wouldn't be investment but he could see them spend many billions over there.

Howe is at risk of being replaced with Graham Potter at this rate.

Howe is going nowhere.

Not yet at least.

Even a mid table finish should be enough for him to keep his job, such is the credit he has with the fans and owners.

That was always obvious from the start, the media got excited with their graphics showing PIF as having £400bn, firstly they don't have £400bn in money that's their investment portfolio and secondly they were never putting huge chunks of it in to Newcastle

They've been annoyingly sensible so far and I think they will be now too, they over achieved last year, will add another £50m 23/24 year old in the summer and get tonali and Barnes back and continue to see some steady growth and improvement

He's not a DM though. Bennacer did way more of the defensive work than Tonali at AC Milan. He's closest in profile to Guimaraes so I'm not sure how well they work together if both want to do the playmaker role.

People need to remember. Having the richest owners, does not make them the richest club.

Stoke owners have a couple of billion, (okay not to the Saudi level) but spend next to **** all on them, an don't really seem to be interested in getting back to the Prem.

Come on newcastle, chop Howe and get Jose in - far more fitting of a club of your stature and not at all gonna be a disaster as he struggles to spend any money without selling off everything that's made them competitive thus far. Do it!
