Advice needed.

I’ve got a 4 year old Omega Speedmaster and my house/contents Insurance are demanding a valuation certificate (they accepted the original receipt for the first 3 years, which I assume is the normal practice)

Anyone got an idea where the best place to get the watch valued?

Cheers.

I think any high street jeweller like Ernst Jones or Goldsmiths offer a valuation service including a full report and letter to insurer. Not sure of the price of this though.

Try Chrono24 and put in the make, model, year and condition and you can find a similar one to find a rough valuation

Yes, normally up to 3 years they'll just take the original receipt or warranty card.  Worth phoning round a few places, as some offer a fixed fee, and some a fee based on the percentage of the value.  I'd try the nearest Omega authorised dealer first (eg the one in the Bullring) and Watches of Switzerland.  Or look for your local valuer via this site: http://www.jewelleryvaluers.org/Find-a-valuer

First venture into the world of Rolex and have my heart set on a Submariner Date - Black face. Current RRP is £6250 yet on Chrono24 they are already going for above that.

I have had Watches of Switzerland commit to getting me one at RRP - they have had to order it in though !

Currently have Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra Golf Edition - love it

I have been searching for a Rolex Sub Mariner Date with steel strap and black face for over a year. Watches of Switzerland are searching for me and have agreed to hold the 2017 rrp of £6250

They are like rocking horse shit but I am adamant I will get oneshadow_oyster_submarinerdate_40?layer=1%

Why the black one? Didn't fancy a hulk or kermit?

I do like he subs but think i'd probably go for the GMT Master II - in blue/black

The Hulk and the Kermit are really, really hard to get hold of.  You have to be in the very good books of an authorised Rolex dealer, ie probably spent a fair bit with them in the year to date to get on the waiting list.  Or be prepared to pay well over RRP for a second hand one.  I've got the blue/black ("Batman") GMT, it's probably my favourite watch.  Still quite hard to get hold of, but a fair bit easier than the Hulk.

I currently own 3 nice time pieces. An Omega Seamaster circa 2001, a Tag Heuer Calibre day date circa 2010 and a Panerai Luminor Ceramica circ 2014.

I now find myself in the position to enter the Rolex world and like the Blue/Red GMT or the black Submariner as above.

I went into Watches of Switzerland on Friday afternoon ready to take one home with me. The guy told me they have a waiting list of 500 and they are only getting 5 of each model in later in the year !!!!! He also said he has had enquiries from as far away as China and Australia wanting the watches. There was i thinking i'd get one straight away, but alas no. Having searched the net afterwards no wonder the pre-owned ones are holding the prices and making money!!!!

If you can get one theres more of a return on them than investing in an ISA.

Its a little like when you were a kid and you wanted some sweets and your mom said no. The more you asked and she kept saying no the more you wanted them !!!

The dilemma now is do i go for a pre-owned one or see if i can pick one up on my travels, Dubai airport maybe or anywhere else whilst abroad?

The position with Rolex is ridiculous.  There are lots of models like the Cellini that you could walk into any main dealer and walk out with one the same day.  All of the 'sports' models like the Submariner and Daytona, absolutely no chance at all, as you've discovered.  Each year at Baselworld (the main trade fair for the watch world) Rolex launch a new model or two.  They're all ridiculously limited, and rare as rocking horse muck.  Last year it was the black and white faced Daytonas with the ceramic bezel.  They retail at about £9.5K and are still selling on resale sites for £15K and upwards.  This year it was the red and blue ('Pepsi') GMT, and again, you've little to no chance of getting one from a main dealer if you haven't got much of a history with them.

I have had a mail from WOS in the city that my long wait (almost 2 years) for a new Sub could be over by end of the month.

I love the simplicity of it and above all else the Rolex subs do "really good metal" as the finish is 2nd to none. Once I have it then I will be chasing the Tag Monaco calibre 11 and that might be the ned of my watch collecting (although I do also fancy a Breitling heritage super ocean 42 - Green bezel, black face)

My wife might stop complaining then :)

I can't believe it! I've wanted that Thomas sabo watch (the one I posted a page back) but it was around the £400 Mark. Looked on very today was reduced to £318 and I had a very code of 15% off and got the watch for about £287! Result !

I was in Exeter on Sunday and paid a visit to the local authorised Rolex jewellers just on the off chance (new it was going to be a long shot).

I asked if they had a GMT II Red and Blue and he told me if i had come in yesterday they had one but it has been sold !!!!

I blame England as my original plan was to be in Exeter on the Saturday but with them playing in the quarters i changed my plans to watch the game. Delighted that England won but gutted as who knows, i may have been the one.

The agent came out with the usual, unlucky sir, these are like rocking horse shit etc. I will be in Dubai airport in September so maybe there is a slim chance while i'm there.

Ah well, i shall keep searching in the hope.

My business partner is refreshing his collection so is looking to move some of his watches. Though it was worth mentioning here in case anyone is interested.

He's selling a Panerai Luminor Black Ceramic, a grey/blue Yachtmaster, and a green Submariner - that one is only 6 months old and still has the receipts.

Think he's looking for £8.5k, £6k and £8k respectively.

Told him I'd mention it here on the off chance. Will post pics later when I'm at home.

Ask him if he'll take £7.5K for the Green Sub.

Apparently I got that one wrong and he wants more than 8k for it.

It's a 1st edition Kermit, or something. I'm not into my watches enough to appreciate what that means!

Strange this is or at least it feels a bit odd.  I have a limited edition Ingersol (1 of 300).

It's broke so I sent it to the UK for repair,  they called me and said that instead of fixing it I could have a 75% off coupon for a slection of other models which are no way as good as my watch.  So I got it back without repair / coupon.

Sent it tro Germany and they said €200 to fix,  no problem.

It is a mechanical with 13 jewels so I expected it to be expensive but I think the UK wanted the watch actually.

I'd say you're spot on there with your theory

They could have been bloody honest about it. Something along the lines of "hey, of course we can fix your watch but also we're really interested in it. If you want to chat here is our number."

I had a similar experience with an Omega I bought in Germany and it really annoyed me.
