G4S confirms ‘ongoing incident’ involving two wings of the privately run category-B jail

Riot officers and ambulance crews have been called to an ongoing disturbance at a privately run jail in Birmingham.

The security company G4S, which controls HMP Birmingham, also known as Winson Green, said the incident began just after 9am and involved two wings of the prison, holding up to 250 inmates.

The situation in jails is now so bad it can be resolved only by a prolonged period of stability and investment, and allowing managers to do their jobs

It is understood that specially trained “Tornado” teams of prison officers are on their way to the jail to try to defuse the situation.

The Victorian category-B jail, which was built in 1849 and is close to the city centre, can hold 1,450 adult remand and sentenced male prisoners. However, it is understood the incident is confined to wings N and P, and the rest of the prison is on lockdown.

A G4S spokesman said: “We are responding to an ongoing incident at HMP Birmingham this morning which began just after 9am involving two wings of the prison. We are working with colleagues across the service to bring the incident to a safe conclusion.”

There are unconfirmed reports that an inmate has been badly injured, though it is understood all staff have been accounted for.

A spokesman for the West Midlands ambulance service said they were called to the prison at 12.23pm. A hazardous area response team was in attendance, together with an ambulance and paramedic area support officer, butno details were available about any casualties or injuries suffered.

The national chairman of the Prison Officers Association (POA), Mike Rolfe, said the incident was “another stark warning to the Ministry of Justice that the service is in crisis”.

“The whole facts surrounding the incident at HMP Birmingham are not known,” he said. “National resources have been deployed to deal with this incident involving approximately 300 prisoners within two prison wings. No staff injuries have been reported and staff are currently monitoring the situation and awaiting national support, through mutual aid.”

It is the third disturbance in English prisons in less than two months. On 6 November a riot at the category-B Bedford prison caused chaos when up to 200 prisoners flooded the jail’s gangways. On 29 October, a national response unit had to be brought in to control prisoners during an incident at HMP Lewes in East Sussex.

There has been a string of warnings about safety behind bars after statistics revealed soaring levels of violence in jails in England and Wales, with assaults on staff up by 43% in the year to June.

POA members held protests outside jails around the country in November over health and safety concerns.

Last month, the justice secretary, Liz Truss, unveiled her plans for prison reform, with measures including a recruitment drive to add 2,500 officers to the frontline and “no-fly zones” to stop drones dropping drugs and other contraband into prisons.

Irish town plagued by callers to 'Babestation' sex chatlines

Quote

The little town of Westport in County Mayo lies under the shadow of Ireland’s “holy mountain” Croagh Patrick, but has earned a sudden and dubious notoriety for decidedly worldly reasons.

Residents of the western Irish town have been bombarded by late night telephone callers in search of sex chatlines belonging to an X-rated British cable TV channel.

Numbers for Westport and the premium-rate “Babestation” hotlines both start with 098, but many Irish callers are omitting the international code for the UK – where the channel is based.

Ireland’s regional development minister, Michael Ring, said his constituents were “aggravated and annoyed” over the late night calls from people believing they were ringing a sex line.

He said: “They are getting these calls in the middle of night. One of those people has an elderly mother and family members all over the world and there could be a call at any time that they would have to take.”

The Fine Gael politician, who represents the same constituency as his party leader and Irish prime minister, Enda Kenny, said he did not see why people in Westport should have to change their numbers instead of the TV channel.

Ireland’s broadcasting and communications regulators said they have no power of their own to compel any change.

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland’s chief executive, Michael O’Keeffe, said he was lobbying UK counterparts on behalf of harassed Westport residents “as a matter of courtesy”.

A spokeswoman for ComReg, which regulates landline and mobile phone networks in the Irish Republic, said it had been in contact with its UK counterpart and was trying to “identify a solution as soon as possible”.

“ComReg advises anyone calling the UK from the Republic of Ireland should always use the prefix 00 44,” she said.

Before the townsfolk of Westport were harassed by callers seeking the adult TV station’s sex chatlines, the town was regarded as the world capital of Botox. Almost all of the world’s Botox is still manufactured by multinational Allergan in Westport.

It's not beyond the realms of technology for Babestation to have a different graphic displaying the different number on its Irish feed.

Still funny though.  Westport is a great party town FWIW :)

Workington police blow up 'suspicious' car parked by fellow officers

A police force carried out a controlled explosion on a "suspicious" car outside a station, not realising its own officers had parked it there.

A bomb squad was called after concerns about an unattended Vauxhall Corsa at Workington police station, Cumbria.

Roads around the building, in Hall Brow, were sealed off and an explosion carried out at 08:00 GMT.

The force blamed "an internal communications error" and apologised to the owner.

Cumbria Police said other officers on duty were not aware colleagues had parked the car outside the station after helping its owner, who had taken ill.

The building was evacuated, a 100m cordon put in place and the vehicle blown up.

Insp Ashley Bennett said: "We have made contact with the owner of the vehicle, explained the situation and have apologised to him.

"The officers who dealt with this morning's incident did so with public safety in mind and followed the appropriate procedures in respect to an unoccupied suspicious vehicle.

"The constabulary will review this incident and will take on board any learning."
