Currently watching Elysium. Seems OK so far

Nice concept, great visually but thought it was an incoherent mess of a film.

But if you're enjoying it, it doesn't matter what I think.

Just a shame the rest of blomkamps films have been a bit of a let down.

District 9 showed a lot of promise that he's never got near equaling let alone exceeding.

I think all 3 short movies on Oats Studios have been rather good.

I'd rather they just stopped making Bond movies. Of course it isn't going to happen, but really, what is there left to do at this point. And to be honest it all feels very facile in a world where kids get blown up going to pop concerts.

I think their frequency spoils them/

Casino Royale completely reignited my interest in Bond, which was really only half hearted before, with Goldeneye being a personal highlight (being a 90's child)

I think Casino Royale was excellent, but the following few films have brought it back down to how it was before. Spectre was absolutely shit.

Like you said, it's all just been done. Casino Royale being a reboot of sorts was a breath of fresh air because it was so different to the parody it had become (Die Another Day was utterly dreadful). Stripped back, less effects, less gadgets, a more vulnerable character. But they seem to have moved away from that again and going more and more back to how it was.

It's tired.

Have yet to watch them (slightly put off by Elysium and Chappie but will give them a go eventually)

I thought Elysium and Chappie were both average.

But I've said on here before, I don't even think Distirct 9 was that good to be honest.

I think the Bourne Identity showed how poor Bond was. You could almost have taken the Bourne Identity, replaced him with James Bond and had the best modern Bond by a mile.

Well I mean that's almost what they did isn't it?

I'd put money on the fact that the stripping back of Bond in Casino Royale was directly a result of the popularity of Bourne.

And to me they could have carried on down that road and made another few films in that style. It could have got really dark, with Bond being a bit of a psycho. At the time that's how I thought they'd do it.

It would have been a Bourne rip off, but it would have been good.

But like I said they seem to just be going back to what it always was now. Gadgets, ludicrous bad guys, rapey sex scenes and cheesey one liners.

The problem was QofS had massive pacing issues, one action scene after another barely held together by a plot that could have worked but they didn't bother to develop it properly

skyfall was awesome though

and then they followed it up with the utterly shite spectre

I agree with everything being said on Bond here, especially about which ones were good and which ones weren't (I do think Question of Sport was slightly better story-wise than many give it credit for), but I suppose I'm making a somewhat different point. The people who are working hard to keep Britain safe these days aren't shagging beauties in the Bahamas or playing baccarat in casinos in Macau or sneaking around the Kremlin; instead they're sat in front of computer screens monitoring WhatsApp groups or taking notes on what Mr Extremist Imam is saying in the mosque down the road. I don't know how many people total died from the three terror attacks in this country so far this year, but it's just too many for me to ignore, and to feel happy about drinking a litre of cola chuckling along at fantastical tales of derring-do as we tell nice stories about ourselves as a nation.

The Bond movie just feels wrong for our times. It was an aspirational post-war product, and is now way past its sell-by date. I know others won't agree with me, and that's fine, but that's my feeling on them as of now.

Does it? What does that mean?

That ra-ra cheerleading for Britain (which is what Bond movies amount to IMO) is (IMO) irrelevant to what's actually happening in the country.

It's not a factual post; it's an opinion about movies. Other opinions are available.

It's supposed to be irrelevant though, Bond is a bad ass super spy with the best gadgets who gets the girls.

I reckon it'd knock the shine off him if he was patrolling pop concerts like  standard security bloke.

But I do agree with everyone else, they should leave it for a good long time now, if they could go 10 years without making one and then bring it back then that would be brilliant.

I think it's possible that you can over analyse a Bond film. Its just an action thriller film with cars, stunts, explosions and half naked bond & girl. Don't stress about it too much.

Two over the weekend:

The Exorcism of Emily Rose - on the one hand, I liked the idea of the courtroom set up - faith v science - but didn't think it was executed well enough. Decent performances, I always enjoy Tom Wilkinson - and Jennifer Carpenter's tormented girl is a ( effective ) disturbingly physical performance - but I felt it could have been better. needed a little more to it unfortunately.

The Men Who Stare at Goats - meh. Was a light hearted second film to the darker film beforehand but whilst there are a couple of amusing moments in it, just felt like the cast were all just goofing around in each other's company. Spacey, Bridges, Clooney, McGregor... A list cast but C grade film. It's only 80 odd minutes but I was bored by the end.

Absolutely.

Besides, Bond works for MI6 and thus operates abroad. He'd have to work for MI5 for domestic threats.
