There must be more too this Barcelona story.

either the figures are not accurate, or Barcelona know something we don’t (a new buyer, or sponsor, or government support, or rule change incoming).

I believe it's closer €150m+ per year (something like €640m over the last 4 years in total, although the source I saw may have been in dollars).

I don't care if he's the best player of all time, that is absolutely disgusting. Professional football is broken beyond belief.

Burn it all down.

They thought the Superleague was coming. The also make a lot from match day stadium tours etc  which has been closed for Covid.

Superleague was the get out clause.

In his pomp he made Barca 25-30 percent of their entire revenue. Was a few studies a while back the Barca actually made a profit out of him.

As he grows older, less influential and new superstars like mbappe, haaland that is diminishing.

Wonder if Pep, Soriano, Begiristain and the other Barca people at Man City can convince their owners to shell out money on the likes of Griezmann to save the finances of their beloved Barcelona.

I believe the Barca players took a 70% pay cut last season as well, I don't know whether there was any of it deferred to be paid now, hence some of the eye-watering numbers.

On the Price of Football podcast, they were saying Messi's new contract will be deferred over 10-15 years!

They need to feel the impact of being so irresponsible.

Really should be relegated, financial mismanagement is as bad as match fixing

Barça resigns from sponsoring H&M for political reasons

The club fears reprisals from China for collaborating with the Swedish brand, which a few months ago denounced the existence of labor camps with people from the Uighur minority

BARCELONA Barça had been negotiating with H&M for months for the textile company to become the new sponsor of the men's football team's walking clothes, but the Swedish brand's commitment not to use cotton from the Chinese region of Xinjiang for the alleged use of forced labor in the sector has led to the cessation of talks, which were already at a very advanced point. The reason is that the Barça entity does not want to create conflicts with China, a huge market that today contributes many millions of euros and potential users.

Club sources have told ARA that the main fears came from a sector of the communications department and from the Catalan office in Hong Kong. Barça officials were very transparent with H&M when it came to explaining why they had decided to leave the issue on standby : they did not want to create problems with the Asian giant. On the other hand, the official version of the entity is that there is no negotiation about to close with a brand to be in charge of making the first team's walking clothes and that right now this asset is not a priority because there are other much more pressing issues. H & M's sponsorship could have reached three million euros a year.

How is it not? Match fixing is a game or two, financially cheating the system is a season

While I'm not defending Barcelona or anyone else, the financial rules are more arbitrary and they change over time and depending on the location. There have always been better teams than others, and some of the better ones are in that position because of an arguably unfair injection of cash. But a football fan can still watch games between those teams knowing that any outcome is theoretically possible. Upsets are rare but do happen and the prospect is exciting.

In match fixing, the outcome is already decided.

Do you seriously think Tony Xia's financial mismanagement is "as bad as match fixing"? The Villa equivalent of Calciopoli?

I was snooping on Red Cafe to see if they'd had anything on Dan James moving and stumbled into their Barca thread and this seemed like a great post so copied here from User 'The Boy' over there:

Excellent article here from the The Athletic https://theathletic.co.uk/2689613/2...?article_source=search&search_query=barcalona

It's behind a paywall so for those that can't see the highlights are:

  • With sales of players like Firpo and Todibo they have raised 26.5M that's about 10% of what they need so far.
  • Pique has agreed to defer some of his salary to future seasons to help them through this one, they hope Busquets and Alba will do the same
  • A huge part of problem is the amortisation of previous bug money signings

The starkness of Barca’s situation can be seen from how dramatically their permitted squad limit cost has fallen. Back in 2019-20, they had the largest salary cap in La Liga at €671m. Last year it was €347m. The total for the new season has not yet been confirmed, but Catalan radio reported on Monday night that it will be in the region of €160m.

That means that the club would only be able to spend about 25 per cent of the total they had available just two seasons ago on salaries and transfer fees during 2021-22.

The amortisation of players signed by the previous board alone adds up to €144m already accounted for in the books for the coming season — including €20m for Philippe Coutinho, €27m for Antoine Griezmann and €24m for Ousmane Dembele.
  • Messi and Barca seem to have reached a deal for him to stay but it can not be announced as they can not register him under the current problems
  • They can not register any of Depay, Aguero, Garcia and Royal without clearing 200M
  • Messi is on top of that, so even if he took a 90% paycut they currently cannot register him
  • There is talk of deferring his salary as well and guaranteeing him a massively well paid ambassadors job at the club in the future, but there are tx issues with this and Messi is nervous of the Spanish tax system for obvious reasons.
Whoever stays or leaves, Messi will likely also have to take a huge pay cut — maybe even something like 80 or 90 per cent — to stay at Barca. The club are looking at ways of making this up to him — such as deferring payment into the future, or guaranteeing him a well-paid ambassador role after his playing career is over. There are however serious tax implications for all these potential solutions, and Messi and his family have learned from experience not to cut corners with the Spanish tax man.

Barca are fecked and really really fecked, Bartomeu has a lot to answer for, he has bankrupted the club, this could see them go under and so far LaLiga is sticking to it's guns, Preisdent of the league Javier Tebas is holding firm

“Barca are currently exceeding their salary cap,” Tebas said recently. “I hope they can include Messi’s wages, but to do so, they will have to cut somewhere else. We cannot make one rule for Messi, another for Haaland…”

He also pointed out that La Liga has survived the losses of Neymar and Cristiano Ronaldo in recent years without hurting its sponsorship or broadcasting deals.

We know about the debts reported to be 1.4 Billion, how do Barca get out of this. Either the league caves in, which seems very unlikely, they end contracts with half their first team or they just go bust.
