I thought it was absolutely fascinating television. Watching all the different new players was loads of fun and just so interesting. Kellyman is a young kid and he was totally fearless. Carlos is like some Spartan warrior. Diaby and Jaden both seem so overloaded with skills on the ball, I often find myself having to hit replay so I can see what's happening at lightning speeds. As for weakness, awkwardness, the bad passes, the missed penalty --- all that stuff seemed incidental to the big, broader reality: We have a cracking good squad.

Considering how deeply Emery tapped into Villa's roster, this match not only bodes well for the Villa, but -- for those of us still pinching ourselves that we're even in Europe -- nudged me across the line towards thinking we definitely need to be pushing for the CL. Why wouldn't be? Who's better than us when we playing well? Maybe Citeh, maybe. But with this group of talented players, we should fear no one.

Main positives: Diaby, Martinez, Dougie, Tielemans, Konsa, Kellyman ... and erm, sort of, Olsen.

Mings super impressive, too. Digne sometimes great.

Diego growing in power and leadership. Skilled and scary.

I feel a little concern about Archer he'll improve with more confidence. I think Torres is absolutely sure to gain in boldness. He's still getting his shipping tape off.

Another useful run out, some nice play mixed in with some poor play.

More than enough time to iron out some of the mistakes.

3 or 4 hospital passes to the dms from defence / keeper risk goals and more importantly, injury.

From the 2nd half performance I can see diaby being the 2nd striker and mcginn staying out right.

Watkins is clearly not back to full sharpness, clean through and sort of passes it back to the on rushing keeper instead of go around the keeper which was the only option as he was being closed down. Its preseason and about movement and fitness so no big deal.

Doug again some misplaced passes but great ball for diaby to score.

Kellyman didn't get a lookin today in his minutes, big phil looks sharper, Chambers did well.

Overall a good win, alot to work on and hopefully konsa hasn't done anymore than have a dead leg.

Now for 3 hours sleep before I need to get up for work 🤦🤦🤦

I’d like to see us play Pau & Mings together in the next game… need to get working on that partnership…

they are both left footed and prefer to play on the left side.

Not a great game ... but that is OK I thought the Newcastle game was more positive for us.

Philogene good game but not as good as the Newcastle game (despite the goal)
He took it nicely though ... great pass from Beundia to Digne for the assist.
Olsen played like a bona fide reserve goalkeeper.
Diaby did bugger all but score </s> He's going to be fine
Pau still settling in, as is Tielemans.
When Konsa and Vinicius had the set to ... I liked the fact that Carlos came over and took over
Kellyman OK
Archer ... getting there
Chambers did OK
Coutinho not bad
Revan did OK

The rest of the first eleven did what they had to do.

Carlos is a big intimidating presence. It’s so awesome.

Everybody had a passport this time?

The Diaby goal was interesting, we are going to be looking for that ball over the press quite a lot this year but him and Ollie were almost standing on each other’s toes.  I guess only time on the pitch together will iron those kinks out.

When did Doug become this good, it like it crept up on us and now he’s like our best player out of no where

He has a manager that knows how to utilise his skillset. To think Gerrard felt he slowed down things too much and wanted to sell him.

On Archer, his movement was good. Missing a peno isn't a big deal, Watkins also misses penalties (we need a good penalty taker actually). Archer needs a strike partner. Playing as a lone striker with Mcginn and Buendia behind him, probably doesn't suit him, unless we are dominating possession in the opposition half.

People make a big deal about left-footed players as if they're so specialised, but right-footed players play on the left all the time. Equally, it's possible to have 2 left-footed players at centre back. It's rare, but only because it's statistically rare to have 2 left-footed centre backs fighting for starts in your squad. Not because lefties have some weird genetic blind spot.

It is funny - Diego Carlos played LCB alongside Jules Konde at Seville in one of the meanest defences in Europe despite both players being right-footed and no-one bats an eye-lid.  I think it was even suggested (by some) at the time that he might replace Mings (an actual left-footer) at LCB.  Yet as soon as a team has two left-footed CBs suddenly it's a massive deal and something that could never work / is high risk.  Personally I kind of think that as 80% of players are right-footed - having left footed defenders makes it statistically more like that opposition attackers will be trying to take on our defenders on their strongest side (i.e attackers are more keen to try and get the ball on their right foot and so when running at a defender will typically try to attack them to the defender's left rather than their right as it is easier to do that on your right foot).
