Can someone please explain the term ‘double pivot’ to me? I hear it all the time and don’t know what it means. Thanks

I’m glad I won’t have to watch his horrible, lazy looking running style, the lackadaisical way he moved around the pitch… maybe he couldn’t help it and it was just the style he was stuck with but… it annoyed me quite a bit tbh… not sure I ever saw him either sprint or chase after the ball…  or look smooth or slick in possession…

couldn’t pass the ball very well either… and certainly not press resistant.

Appreciate the job he did for us (added height, physicality, a bit of aerial presence or even prowess) but far too limited, just not an “Unai player”.

Two defensive midfielders. One as anchor the other more box to box. I think Wenger introduced it to PL with Arsenal as that's first I can think of using 4231 with the double pivot

a cup run that probably would have cost us a European spot from the league last season

Was a lot worse Villa players involved that day

Not least from our highest paid player ever Coutinho.

Always thought he was a weird signing, a lot of wolves fans were happy to get rid. We overpaid for him and wasn’t what we needed.

He may have had the odd decent performance, but he has also put in some poor performances. The fact that he only has 10 starts in 18 months shows it all.
Glad we are getting some money back

Big Donk! He is simply not a good enough passer to suit Emery ball, but is treated with too little respect by some on here. He is a specialist defensive midfielder, his reading of the game and positioning is top class, strong and good in duels and a solid work horse. He would not have strated so many games for Belgium under the period they were ranked no 1 in the world if he was not a very good player. But as said not good enough passer for us, also seems to be on a downwards trajectory in his career.

All the best and good luck!

Workhorse is right and probably on a downward trajectory. For me, his lack of mobility, positional awareness and inability to make himself available for a pass are his downfall in Unai’s systems. He is what he is (usually hate that phrase) but we need more.

Fully agree that we need someone who is a better passer in that position and that he should be sold asap as he doesn't fit the style we play. Also far too slow as we need also the CM to be able to rush back and help out when we play the high defensive line.

Only thing I don't agree with is positional awareness, at least the defensive part of it, I think he is top class at that. I'm thinking of the way he blocks space and passing alternatives and the times he has spotted danger and helped the CB out.

I think that’s a fair summary. Maybe too defensive in comparison to Bouba?

Have you seen much of Tim? Would he fulfil this sort of role?

One of the worst players I’ve seen at Villa in years. Happy if I don’t have to watch him play again.

Edit: ok, I got carried away. We’ve had a lot worse but I still think he’s shit.

What do you mean with shit? A player who has 32 caps for the national team that has been ranked top in the world for large parts of that time, can such a player really be shit?

Yeah I agree that Big Donk is too much of a defensive specialist for our playing style. As I see it both our midfielders need to be exquisite passers, seems a perfect fit with Bouba being a bit stronger defensively and Luiz stronger attacking wise, but both more or less complete players.

I'd love to see more of Tim! The few times i've seen him it seems like he is a really competent passer, and seems to have a good engine, box to box player. Only reservation I have is that I don't know how he copes with the tempo of the PL, if he is good enough defensively.

Would be a good move for everyone, as long as we can find a replacement.  Hopefully Unai has a gem like Moreno up his sleeve.  It doesn't look like we are in for Phillips anyway.

Should be.

He's on £175k a week which is more than our highest paid player and he doesn't get in our best XI. It would be stupid move that I'm happy for West Ham to waste money on.

I was sat in the Trinity for that game and will never forgive him. He's been average af in his bit-part appearances since then. Care to elaborate on why you think otherwise?

I bet he has trouble sleeping at night knowing this.

Was a weird signing along with Bednarek near the end of that window.  Neither fit our shape or team structure under Gerrard and it was like Lange thought they were bargains, so they came in.  Never had a problem with Donck.  Always did a job and was reliable, just doesn't pass well enough to be starting in Emery's team.  I wish him the best going forward.
