The Austrian born actor Robert Hoffman, who will be remembered by those of us old enough to have watched him in the Franco-London Films series 'The Adventures of Robinson Crusoe', passed away on 4 July 2022, aged 82 years.

The 13 part series followed the adventures of Crusoe as he set off on a discovery of his new island home, after being washed up on a sandy beach, after the ship he was travelling on, the Esmeralda, bound for Guyana from Brazil, was sunk in a violent storm. Crusoe faced the trials and tribulations of being the sole survivor of the wreck, and had to make fire for the first time, protect himself from the elements and deal with setbacks and threats to his personal safety with the arrival on the island of cannibals and mutineers. The series was also remembered for its evocative theme tune, written by Robert Mellin and Gian-Piero Reverberi, which has since been recreated by bands such as The Art of Noise.

Blond haired and handsome, Hoffman had spent three years studying drama at the Poule Vanneck academy in Paris, when, at the age of 23, he made the series. The Multi-lingual actor had previously learned to fence and ride, which served him well in  a distinguished career where he was often called upon to play adventurers or rugged action heroes, mainly in German language films, although he did enjoy stardom in the UK once more in 1980, when he appeared alongside Gregory Peck, Roger Moore, Patrick McNee, Trevor Howard and David Niven in the movie 'The Sea Wolves' and also appeared, briefly in the US series 'Dallas.'

Little was known about Hoffman in the UK and it remained that way until 1997, when he was interviewed by BBC TV and radio to promote the first release of the series on DVD by Network. After having spent several years living in Rome and Madrid, Hoffman eventually returned to his home town of Salzburg.
