You see thats where I disagree, I am not saying he doesn't do it on occasions, but not nearly enough or with enough consistency to be relied upon.... we need an upgrade in that role.

I have no issue witht the rest.

We don't really know what Deano wants...He keeps his cards close to his chest.

Don’t think we should forget and overlook just how good Doug was for us during the backend of the survival season… arguably our best and most important player at the time. He has it in him… still young and a lot of development for him to get through…

But, again, I would welcome a new DM or MF with extra physical presence and ability to help us dominate the ball/possession… we are too lightweight imo… and nothing wrong with having different options in the squad.

I see Luiz as a valuable member of the squad and a player with huge potential… worth remaining patient with, he has a lot of quality.

Anyway, my previous comment was just a theory. It seems as though it’s Deans more preferred kind of midfield system but who knows? We may play or set up differently next season.

The evidence has been there on how Dean has set up his teams, at least here and at Brentford (Walsall?). He likes that DLP… has he ever played with a proper DM? A full on destroyer? Consistently?

We struggled badly against Brentford and made Woods look like a star…

But if it is the system he wants, then, out of our existing players, Luiz is best suited to that role and position. Pirlo’s main strength wasn’t his defensive ability and he wasn’t a physical presence but he could contribute in that side of the game too.

IF this is correct, then it’s actually McGinn’s position that needs analysing more…. the Gattuso role…

A disciplined McGinn & Luiz at the start of the season performed very well for us, with Barkley given the attacking freedom and license to go forwards and help Ollie and Jack…

All the Arsenal fans I know IRL are sound for the record 😇

Likewise.

The bell-ends give all the rest a bad name by shouting the loudest, gravitating towards Arsenal TV and Twitter. Who'da thunk.

Wow. What a signing!

I've just watched the obligatory Youtube highlights and 2 things immediately stand out:

- His awareness of where his players are. Backheels, dummies, no-look passes make up a lot of the highlights.

- The runs their forwards make. It doesn't matter what Emi is surrounded by, they make the run knowing he'll deliver the pass anyway.

Exciting times.

He has proper individual skills but plays for the team. In no way is he selfish. He will pass if its the better decision. More of a team player than Jack in many ways which bodes well.

I think he will be the number 10 as he has the ability to track back and help in midfield and do it well. None of the jogging back that we saw from Barkley. He is like a Jack Russell with his defensive contributions.

He is yet another with something to prove just like Watkins last season

Theres only 2 Emis is going to be sung alot next season . UTV !

I have been hoping for us to sign this guy since Jan 2019 and it looks like we finally have him. Perfect for us. If you have him and Jack on each wing drifting inside, Ollie's tireless running up front and two proper box to box 8's making runs beyond them the movement and creativity is going to be too hot to handle for most defenses.

Still time for Arsenal to snatch him so I won't count my chickens yet after the Wilson episode last summer.

What we need now is a pacy left back (love Targett has become our steady eddy), as we need to surround these two special guys with quality runners. So we end up with loads of overlaps, with the fullbacks going past the wingers on the outside, and the two 8's going past the wingers on the inside. Makes marking and tracking back a nightmare for defenses. Then you have a double pivot on either wing capable of easily finding those runners or even using those runners as a decoy and carrying the ball themselves.

We need to address our other weakness this summer which is playing out from the back.

If you have two tenacious 8's then a deep lying playmaker is the perfect foil.  The DLP will drop in between the centre backs when playing out of defense to pick up the ball and ping pinpoint balls out wide to the wingers or over the top for the striker. When in the opposition half they will look to be the easy pass back for the midfielders and will then look to switch play to the other side of the pitch or ping one over the top for the striker, or a runner from deep.

Douglas Luiz has not really been the DLP I thought we had signed two summers ago. He seems to be a cross between and DLP and a Box to Box midfielder. He can do both jobs but not to the standard of a proper specialist.

Not going to happen. Arsenal faffed and rather than wait a little and push, he said bollocks to that I'm joining this proper club over here. Arsenal could match the bid tomorrow and unless he's not a serious man, he's our player.

I'm so totally utterly sold on Buendia, even at 40mill.

Sorry to say, but this means it's not happening. Never does when I'm this convinced about a player 😔

Great save.

Not concerned at all about Arsenal re bidding. They cant/dont want to pay the transfer fee so he wont be going there. If you want a top player then you pay the top money. Its disrespectful to Naaarwich to assume just because its Arsenal they will let him go on the cheap. Why should they?

I expect us to try a evolve the style next season. Be more on the front foot and control possession. Not so much the counter attacking unit we were this season gone.

Also Buendia tends to operate on the right, and Smith prefers two 8's and a 6. So I'm not expecting the 4-2-3-1 much next season.

Best example of a DLP is Pirlo.
AC Milan played him as the deepest midfielder and he was the playmaker, one of my favourite players ever 👌

In front or beside him, they had Gattuso. The aggressive, tenacious harrier/disruptor/destroyer. He would do the “dirty work” and pass the ball onto to the more skilful, fair players.

And then Seedorf, quality and creativity on the ball with a keen eye for goal.

Ahead of them, they had the likes of Kaka and amazing strikers such as Crespo & Shevchenko.

So, if we are looking to emulate that kind of midfield/system, I can see Luiz developing into Pirlo’s role. I am not comparing the players, just the role or responsibility. When on form, Doug has shown that he has an excellent eye for a pass, great touch & quality on the ball and can break up attacks too - we saw the best of him when he made a huge contribution in keeping us in the league.

McGinn could possibly take on that Gatusso role and has some similar traits. Not as good defensively (yet) but better in an attacking sense. He does have that ability to constantly pressure opponents and knick the ball off them.

Sanson could probably take that on too.

Our CAM, Jack or Buendia, would take on the Seedorf role…

I’ve just wondered whether that is the kind of midfield system Deano wants and it did work during the beginning of the season with Barkley in form and McGinn and Luiz behind him and in decent form.

It was a very disruptive season and consistency and lack of form became an issue. Hopefully it won’t be like that next season. I would still like to see some strength/physicality and ability to control possession in there so not averse to a new DM or MF at all.

For me, the crux of this is who can be our Gatusso... my gut tells me that Tro is right... we need someone either from our youth squad or an astute signing... but so far I can’t see who that player will be from our current first team....... I’m half Calabrese, half Irish, so Gatusso is one of my all time heroes

I’ll admit that in the ‘Pereira or Buendia’ thread. I plumped for Pereira, but that takes nothing away from my excitement for this deal! I hope all the paper talk is true and that it’s essentially done.

Having two magicians in our team is going to be ... magical! I’m salivating at the thought.

I have skipped that salivating and gone straight to premature ejaculation!

Buendia all day long, but if Pereira is going for 15 to 20m get them both!
