That's why the metric exists. But your logic is essentially like saying that it's not useful or scientific to look at shots vs shots on goal to determine how many decent chances were created in a game. The stats are facts, it's all about how you use them. If you're only interested in the result at full time then that's fine, but don't act like someone just pulled xG out of their arse, it's simply a compound calculation based on a set of data from the game.
