Today and especially the final 30 minutes, reminded me so much of last season.  Give it to Grealish and pray he can do something.  Disappointing to see.

Barkley going off was a shame, as our midfield needed him today.  Luiz and McGinn in particular looked jaded.  It’s early days with Bert and he probably is not match fit in the slightest but I’m a little worried about how he can influence games for us?  I don’t see a real turn of pace or that trick that’ll win us games. The improvement in Trez this season gives me hope though that Bert can do the same once he gets a regular run of games in him.

The problem with today is our bench and overall squad is woefully weak.  If our first eleven aren't at it, we have very little else and it will cost us games.

Konsa MOTM for me today.  Just hope the 8/9 days rest and work done in training will mean we’ll see a better performance at West Ham.

PS - anyone else think the pitch seemed to cut up quickly today and didn’t look in the best of condition?  Nothing that would have affected the performance or result but just an observation.

Re. The pitch, March hit that winner on a half volley as the ball bubbled up off the turf as he hit it. Would have been interesting to see where it would have gone without the bobble.

We looked very good in snatches but it didn’t fully click today up front. Frustrating but maybe a down to earth moment for some of them? Let’s come back strong after a rest next Monday. Voted Konsa MOTM marginally ahead of Trez as he took his chance.

If course it was a penalty. I don't even think Trezeguet went down theatrically because he seemed quite hurt and it seemed a decent whack under the shin pad. Slow motion nothing looks as bad. Even if it was debatable then Oliver overturning it as a clear and obvious error is a clear and obvious error. It's a shame because he was doing well up until then.

I thought we played pretty well but it just wouldn't go over the the line.

Their first goal was shocking defending and their second was an extremely lucky miskick from a bobble. Like against Southampton, we're conceding some very exceptional goals.

I was really frustrated with Traore. Couldn't do anything but cut inside every time and it kept stopping the attack.

that first goal brighton scored tho, our closest defensive player (to our goal), was 10ft inside THEIR half.......shocking tbh.

Yeh I don’t get how that happens. It was like how Liverpool defended against us. We’re not good enough to be having that high a line just yet.

Not really sure how 38% can think Trezeguet was MOTM? He missed so I many cast iron chances it was anm embarrassment.

He did seem our most dangerous player and the most likely to score. Didn’t stop all game. Should have earned us a penalty too.

The open goal miss was criminal though.

because every time the ball was at his feet you thought something was going to happen. linked up brilliantly with cash before being switched to the left to help targett out who was having a mare. easily our most creative outlet today

Predicted a 2-1 loss and so it transpired. However, I didn't expect it to happen in that way.

It seems we can only win against teams we aren't 'supposed' to beat. This isn't a sustainable model.

We are more likely to win 5-0 at Stamford Bridge than we are to get a draw at home to Burnley/Brighton/Palace, or even bloody Stoke!

I'm all for an exciting transition but we need to start taking points from games like today.

Last season we couldn't hold a lead against the top sides and that almost cost us our Premier League status. This season we have managed to win those games and we thought that was a step up.

Unfortunately, we seem to have traded better results against the top sides, for a series of brain farts against the lesser sides.

January can't come soon enough.

I don't mean for transfers, I mean because we have apparently more winnable games: Against Man United and Spurs.

Lost Barkley in 3rd minute and half the players looked gassed from international break and...we still did more than enough to win + got a VAR bumming at the death to screw us  out of deserved point. It’s a shame but there’s no need to overreact. We’ll be better next time out with or without Ross back fit.

exactly...brighton had bugger all internationals. we had the core of the team. they had 2 weeks to prepare for us, we had 1 day

P‘raps just confirms this xG thing is a bit of an irrelevance?

Nah, it’s a good metric, perhaps the best available. You just have to figure out what it’s telling you about your team. Today as a one off it shows what I think was fairly obvious- that our forwards (ahem Trez) didn’t take our chances, but that we created enough chances to win. Similarly it shows that Brighton were not only clinical, but as they not only met but exceeded their xG, probably a bit lucky.

I get the high line today, as brighton are a team who prefer build up play and aren't likely to catch us quick break

But ffs at least mark the striker when your holding the line, and even if you dont mark him get everyone level so he will be off side

I've got too much going on the even get angry at the moment, it's just such a villa thing to do results like today

I read a stat at half time that said we have won 1 game out the last 58 home games we have gone in at half time losing, at that was the 2-1 win against watford last season

1 put of 58 after going behind before half time. That's **** dreadful

Wow, is that right? That’s crazy bad.

maybe the rules have changed but when i was refereeing and a player said "I got the ball first, ref."  the standard answer was "too bad you fouled him after that."  maybe the rules have changed but it doesn't seem reasonable that his heel bumping the ball as his foot swings past to kick the ankle of the opponent should make any difference to the fact that THE DEFENDER KICKED THE ANKLE OF THE ATTACKER WHILE THE BALL WAS STILL WITHIN PLAYING DISTANCE!!!!!   Clear and obvious errors only, right.

Other than that.  giving Lamptey Red card when there are just a few minutes left did nothing but take away any movement and momentum we were building accomplished nothing resembling fairness.

those two blunders were ridiculous  - but the reason we lost was poor finishing and lack of aggression in the Penalty Area.  Trez, we learned, is capable of putting any open shot, from anywhere, safely over the cross bar.  Rookie level of shooting.
