VT Supporter Popular Post sidcow Posted September 10, 2020 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted September 10, 2020 To my surprise I couldn't find a thread for Mark Delaney? If I've missed it apologies and can the Mods merge. Just watched a great interview with him on AVTV. He was one of my favourite players but its struck me he's become a proper Villa Man. Great player, started coaching the under 15s on a part time basis and now in charge of The Academy with 21 years service with the club. It was a very interesting interview which I urge you to watch and shows the connectiveness flowing through the club. I didn't realise George Boateng was also coaching with him. Talked nonchalantly about their 6th place league finish. God, imagine that, Villa finishing 6th. Seems like a universe away. * His accent was funny as well. Definitely a Welshman living in Brum for too long. Anyway, I remember feeling really sad when his career was ended prematurely and delighted he's forged a post playing career in football full stop but especially with us. Mark Delaney. A Villa man. * sorry, he may not have spoken about this, I think I read it on Wikipedia after I watched the video and thought he had talked about it, but the point still stands. 17
Zhan_Zhuang
Good post, I remember watching him play many times. As you say unfortunate with injuries but he did give one hundred percent.
Tomaszk
Loved Delaney. Robbed of his career by a couple of disgusting, cowardly fouls.
Tom13
I loved him as a player as well and saw a short version of his interview the other day. Spoke really well. Delighted he's still at the club.
gwi1890
I noticed the accent to he didn’t sound like a lad from south wales , but not quite a brum , its funny how people adopt an accent similar to what Der Hammer did
Powehi
Unfortunate time to start a thread on the Welsh Wizard, given he's just overseen an 8-1 defeat. Anyway, decent player but I always preferred Steve Watson at that era of me going down VP.

Zatman
Always seemed a more intelligent player than a dynamic player so no surprise he has taken to coaching. Didnt he lead the revolt vs O'Leary in 2006, he was wrongly treated by him that season even though he played really well

Still one of the best things I really remember from being in the military. Lying in the hospital bed and watching Delaney slide 15 yards and foul everyone.
KevinRichardsonsMoustache
In a match at Craven Cottage against Fulham (the year escapes me), Carlos Bocanegra took out Delaney with one of the most disgraceful challenges I’d seen. I don’t think the Fulham player got booked. Delaney lay there in agony and it hit me that the look on a his face was fear for his career: as soon as tackle hit, we held our breaths because we knew his injury record. I think Delaney did the same thing. This has sprung to mind a few times this season as we’ve seen a number of quite disgraceful challenges that had the potential to do real damage to a player’s career (Wesley being the most obvious). I’ve also had that feeling of ‘why tf did that tackle have to happen to him’. Anyway, Delaney came back - if not stronger, then more determined to put in those outrageous sliding tackles of his. VT Supporter mjmooney Posted September 11, 2020 VT Supporter Share Posted September 11, 2020 I think Fred Guilbert must have watched a lot of Delaney videos.
slowandlow
Not a bad player and one of the better right backs we've had in my lifetime (probably says more about the dearth in quality in that position since the 80s) His "Barry must go to liverpool" bollox whilst still employed by the club left a bad taste for me though
KenjiOgiwara
It's okay to say that. Delaney was a much much better right back than history gives him credit for. He had some sloppy tackles and clangers, but I thought he was a very good footballer. Edited September 11, 2020 by KenjiOgiwara
ramshackler
I absolutely love Delaney. The most committed player. How many times did he injure himself doing some ridiculously brave clearance writing himself off against the posts or other players. Think In the end it was one of those knee against the post jobs that was just one too many injury. Was a really good player as well with a great engine. I was working at BMH towards the end of his playing days he was a real gent off the pitch as well. Delighted he has stayed around and forged a good coaching career with the club. Strikes me as an ideal personality to be bringing up young players
