Remember when rather than get our existing ventilator manufacturers to make more, we decided it was a better idea to get a non specialist company to invent a new one?

Remember when we opted out of a group scheme with the EU because we apparently missed an email?

Remember earlier this month when our PM, and figurehead of vote leave, urged nations to "pull together" to combat the virus?

The thing is, it's not even that 'more ventilators, faster' would have been particularly important in the end (we didn't run out of ventilators, though of course we thought they were more important at the time). It's just what it suggests about the competence of the government's approach to the crisis.

I honestly wonder if there was a kind of government-wide belief that this would be an opportunity to show off 'post-Brexit' Britain in a new light. There was all that emphasis in March on how those crazy Europeans were going 'beyond the science' in locking down, and that we wouldn't need to do that, taking 'the right measures at the right time'. Then there was wanting Dyson to reinvent the ventilator. Trying to handle the virus as if it was an international trade fair?

Moral quandary...

Me and the Mrs are struggling to juggle childcare with work and me running a business.  I've doubled my dosage of antidepressants because of the stress, the Mrs has just had a prescription for the first time in years today.

We've no intention of sending the kids back to school and nursery yet as we don't think it's safe, and in the case of school it won't be a normal school experience so our eldest (in reception year) could well be freaked out by it.

We have a younger cousin, in her mid 20s, who is willing to come and stay with us and keep an eye on the kids so we can work during the day.  She has been on lockdown since 3rd March (had a cough) and has taken it seriously since then.  We have also been super strict with lockdown, only going out to shop for essentials, wearing a mask, etc.

To me, it's against the guidelines and feels like a bad thing to do.  BUT - it'll be beneficial to the mental well-being of all involved, including our cousin who is bored rigid at home.  It'll also help us to earn more money which, y'know, is kind of important.

I know what Dom would do, but what should I do?  And will we all get fined if one of my neighbours phones the old bill?

You are the ref.  Go!

To me that sounds perfectly reasonable.  Perhaps get her to take a test and then move her in if it's all clear.  Also pics or GTFO.

One part I really don't understand is that there are a bunch of countries that have a working app. Can't we just get a copy and roll it out here? Reinventing the wheel here seems pointless and is clearly not working. I know the obvious answer is the govt wanted to shovel some money to a mate to do the work, but it is not a good answer.

A main issue, from my understanding, is that we want centralised data.  This has been called dodgy at best and nefarious at worst.  Everyone's data all in the hands of one company who can then analyse it all and use it as they wish.  Classic Cambridge Analytica stuff.  Other nations have developed apps with Apple and Android where the data is decentralised and therefore user privacy is protected.

I saw a headline this morning that Australia took the approach are going after - bluetooth and centralised data - and so far it has been used to track and trace 1 (one) case nationwide.

So sorry for your loss.  I wish there were something I could say that would flick the switch back to "happy", but all I can offer is the support of all your mates on VT...

Note absolutely sure on the rules in England, but the rules here are stricter and a change of address is allowable.

If current living circumstances are causing stress you can get out and move, once.

It has to be demonstrably pre planned and a one off. You couldn’t just jump in the car, drive a few hundred miles and then a few days later change your mind and drive back again, stopping off for some sight seeing en route.

A pre planned one off move is ok.

I don't see the quandary. Get it done.

(OK, maybe I'm being disingenuous, I do see the dilemma but I still wouldn't hesitate).

As other people have said exceptional circumstances, and if it helps then that's what should matter.  Remember also you have Cholmondeley Castle nearby, if you need to test your eyesight 👌

Cheers. Cholmondeley might be a bit far away so perhaps Tatton Hall may be safer...

Apropos of nothing, my surname is Warner and Cholmondeley-Warner was the name of the posh character in Harry Enfield, as I recall.

My daughter is offloading the grandson to the other grandparents as they said yes and we said no. The grandsons father hasnt been strict with his lockdown and as much as I want to see my grandson I could not agree. If they had all been strict I would absolutely have him over. So your circumstances @NurembergVillan I say go for it.

Same here, although my wife has health issues that make it hard to look after our little one whilst I'm working (even working from home).

Today we visited the grandparents in their garden for an hour so they could look after my daughter for a bit - first time since we all locked down very strictly. We figured since we've all been locked down and safe that maybe we should just accept that we need a bit of help. It is a hard decision to make though, and will we do this regularly? I don't know....
