What happened with Kalinic? I remember us signing him, him looking decent-ish and then he just...vanished.

Was he crapper than I remember? Behind the scenes antics? Injury?

He's barely made the bench in years

He played for 7 or so games, in i think 3 of them he conceded some really ropey goals.

Got injured & never got his spot back when he returned to fitness.

Pity this one, was in hindsight a terrible purchase, but when we signed him he was borderline Croatia no.1 and was decently rated.

Didnt work out though, glad we have got his wages off the books, especially if we also get Trez off the books soon.

Was it bizarre at the time though? He had an ok rep, was fighting for the Croatia no.1 spot.

He was in the Croatia squad at the World Cup 6 months before

Looks like Gareth Barry.

edit: oh he’s the Portuguese lad we signed  as a sweetener for Mendez!

Mendes did some great business for us as well 😛   makes it more bizarre

A free as in paying off the rest of his contract then yes.

I imagine the contribution or pay off was high watering.

You got to respect the hustle. He came, he couldn't move, he got paid PL wages to play sunday league football in his home land

He wasn't great. Debut was laughably bad, his positioning and read of game all over the place. Genuinely looked like had never kept before. IIRC he had started to look a bit more capable but then the concussion game was end for him. 15 conceded in 8 games, 1 clean sheet.

I remember watching him warm up one Championship game, I think at that stage he was a number 3. You've never seen a warm up so half arsed in your life. It was actually disrespectful to the senior keepers on the books.

Then the warm up with the outfield lads he didn't move an inch for any shot.

To think remi (super sulk) Garde got in a huff when we didn't sign this guy !!!!!

Really not sure what went wrong tbf - his CV looked good enough. But he showed very little.

You would hope that the buying club covered whatever loyalty fee he may have been due (usually the value of their remaining contractual salary).

With that in mind, this is great for us and gets us one step closer to being able to justify another incoming signing.

Trez next.

Then hopefully a few more soon.

Maybe there is something in the waiting till the 1st July to buy players on the continent afterall.

I think I read somewhere that it was to do with FFP.  Any sales now are for the current FFP period, whereas if we had sold them before it would have been last FFP period which should already be quite healthy with the £100m sale of Jack.

Yeah.  We should have been looking to buy before and sell after.

But other clubs that don't have a 100m profit from selling jack are likely to have already spent their previous FFP allowance and so will only be able to buy after.

Probably the biggest goal keeping flop we have had. At last he is gone

There have been a few over the years, here are another couple (the second sadly went to put after that goal at The Porndrome):

Was are probably paying most of his wages as well

Hajduk probably couldnt afford a transfer fee more than couple of hundred thousand

Kiraly was my first thought on this topic.

As I've said many times strange signing. Would be intrigued who really pushed for it as certainly didn't seem it was Dean Smith.

It's puzzling.  I'd always wondered if it was an agent thing, often moves are driven like that (I figured that Anwar on loan to Everton was such a thing) but Kalinic was with a very small Croatian firm called Pharos Sport Agency so it's unlikely we were signing him with a view to building a relationship for more players down the road. I'm just guessing that somebody really rated him and felt he was undervalued.   That goal he conceded two minutes into his debut seemed to be the ending of him.
