Just worrying a bit over what evidence there is that Henry could make our defence better.

Also the scoring stats are a bit deceptive. We have rarely turned spells of dominance into substantial leads and that’s really how to win matches.

Depends on his backroom staff. If knowledge of defending was everything, Bruce would have done a better job.

I think we have to thank JT for our fairly impressive defence last year.

Johnstone isnt getting rave reviews at rhe albuon. They are conceeding quite a few goals with him between rhe sticks

I was never that impressed, but certainly light years ahead of the disasters we replaced him with.

Would be funny after the rumours of the new manager having a presence/spies at the game today if the away end have an assortment of Henry/Rodgers/Fonseca/Arteta/Smith masks to turn to...

And a cabbage mask. Don’t forget he is in the running.

That’s that hard to be honest.

I don’t get the other guy. What was the point? Gotta be the most dodgy deal to keep Mendes sweet I’ve seen for a while.

Why not promote from within and give Delaney the job until the end of season. He’d bring several of the young players through while playing in the same way that Smith would which the Villa fans want.

Someone mentioned Conte earlier. That’s also a decent shout if gettable. He would shake the whole foundations at Villa Park while taking no shit from the players.

The only way Henry could help us defensively given the current squad is by helping us keep the ball - not sure I want to see possession for the sake of possession, but yeeesh we fell apart when Chester went off and we didn't need to. That said, Jan window is soon enough so I reckon we can fix it up at the back with a new CB suited to whatever style Henry intends. If it's Henry course!

Conte as manager, Mourinho as assistant and Marcelo Lippi as DOF.

If you don't think thats possible then you have no ambition.

Fact.

Anyway, I'm thinking it will be Smith more and more.

I don’t think we need a manager with years and years of experience. But a manager with at least some experience as opposed to non at all would be ideal.

Regarding Henry. He has had experience as a coach and assistant manager while playing under probably the best manager around so it wouldn’t be a complete gamble.

Also I think it is fairly certain that we will also be getting an experienced DOF (I've assume an experienced manager / coach) so a less experienced manager should (if the DOF is good enough) have a mentor, someone to bounce ideas past and / or someone to offer some advice.  Obviously in order for that to work the DOF and manager have to have a lot of mutual respect and understand the limits of their specific roles.  If Henry is favourite then I think (much as some think it is unattainable) Wenger becomes more likely as, at the very least a target, the DOF.  Can stay in football but avoids the stress and pressure of everyday management.  Opportunity to start building a legacy at another big club.  Chance to work with and develop the managerial career of one of his best ever signings / players.  Suddenly the beginning of a proposal that could be quite exciting for him.  Probably also someone who could be interested in a deal / package that gets around FFP (share options).  It would be a hell of a statement and if it is even being discussed it would all be about the owners selling a vision of where we could be rather than where we are.  Both Henry and Wenger have been in the UK long enough to know what we could be....

Henry with houllier as DoF would be an equally good match as wenger. Houllier is currently head of global football for the Red bull group of clubs. He would have an obscene number of contacts, knowledge, DoF / management experience and understands our club having managed here before. Only trouble is prising him away from RB. But if anyone can do it it is our owners. Just a thought.

Henry would be a champagne manager who'd need a champagne budget. We'll be looking again in January. Here watching Brentford dominate Leeds at elland road, just hit the bar. Silly decision makers at villa, as per.

I'm not saying you are going to be wrong, but there's absolutely nothing to base this on.

We already have a champagne attack so I’d imagine he would do fine.

When did anyone say it was nothing to do with Dean Smith? People just pointed out it’s not only down to Dean Smith. It’s a structural approach involving various factors.

It’s partly down to the analysts who research every aspect of a potential signing’s attributes to ensure they’d fit the Brentford system. The coaches of the B team who introduce the system to people on the fringes of the first team. It’s the specialist coaches who focus specifically on corners, passing, and free kicks. It’s the directors of football who set the philosophy and make football decisions on a macro level. It’s to do with Dean Smith who oversees the philosophy, the coaching, and the first team. And it’s finally the players who are performing the specific job for which they’ve purposely been recruited.

Brentford fans themselves will tell you that it’s not just down to Dean Smith, and if he was to leave, they’d be confident of the next man carrying on where he left off.
