EXCLUSIVE: 'He was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped' -Las Vegas shooter's brother says family is 'dumbfounded' at massacre and have no idea of motive

  • Stephen Paddock, 64, opened fire at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in Las Vegas Village early on Monday morning killing at least 50
  • His brother Eric tells DailyMail.com his family have no idea what happened to make him shoot
  • 'He was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped or something,' he said .
The brother of the Las Vegas shooter said that he was a normal guy who must have 'snapped' before carrying out the worst mass shooting in American history.

In an exclusive interview with DailyMail.com, Eric Paddock said that 'something happened' to make his brother Stephen kill at least 50 people and injure 200.

Eric said that there was 'absolutely no indication he could do something like this' and said that Stephen had no political or religious affiliation.

He said: 'He was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped or something'.

Speaking from his home in Orlando, Florida, Eric said: 'We know absolutely nothing, this is just, we are dumbfounded.

Hope she's not involved: Eric Paddock, the shooter's brother, said of Marilou Danley: 'She has nothing to do with this, at least from my perspective.'

At least 50 people are dead and 200 injured after the Sunday shooting at the Las Vegas music festival

'We have absolutely no idea. Our condolences go to the victims and all their families'.

Eric said that he and Stephen, 64, lived on different coasts - Stephen's last address was in Mesquite, Nevada - and that they did not speak that often.

He said that his mother was 'in shock' and struggling to cope with the news.

He said: 'Our family is OK, we're sitting in here in our house hoping that everyone doesn't attack us.

'My mother is 90 years old, lives down the street from me, we're just completely dumbfounded

You can imagine how this is affected her.

'He's my brother, we don't have a very close relationship but we talk occasionally. There's no rhyme or reason here, it makes no sense'.

Eric said that they were hoping that the police do not shoot dead his brother's girlfriend Marilou Danley, 62, who is wanted by the FBI and was living with Stephen in Mesquite.

He said: 'She has nothing to do with this, at least from my perspective.

'He was just a guy. Something happened, he snapped or something, he was just a guy.

'He has no political affiliation, no religious affiliation, as far as we know. This wasn't a terror attack'.

Be warned there are some rather grim pictures in the Mail article

How the hell do you even get 8 guns into a hotel room?

Pretty easily. It's been a few years since my last visit to the US, but they don't do bag checks. If I enter a hotel with two suitcases it wouldn't look out of the ordinary and you can likely fit 8 guns comfortably in just one suitcase. It's also Nevada where you can open carry any gun without an open carry licence, he likely hid them in bags, but the law in Nevada he could have just walked in with 8 weapons clearly visible and broken no laws.

Jesus Christ

The culture there it's borderline sociopathic when it comes to guns. It's perfectly acceptable in a country where there's literally a mass shooting every day, to walk into a hotel with 8 weapons designed purely to kill other human beings? Just w t f

My first thought when seeing the shooters name and age was "Old guy, gone mental".

I bet there was no reason for him deciding to do it, other than alcohol, an issue with his wife, anger and the fact he had 8 guns in the room with ammo.

As Brits, we find it hard to think "why would he have 8 guns", but in the States, its so common, it'd be like us walking around with a pen knife.

What a **** needless tragedy :(

406 injured, unbelievable.  Like everyone else I'm just dumbfounded that someone can get hold of that kind of arsenal.

Wow, numbers are incredible. I thought the worst watching that video with the long, long gunfire. Into a crowd every bullet hitting an innocent person.

I'm not sure how credible this is but I read somewhere that he deliberately picked a hotel suite opposite the festival and had a video camera setup that alerted him to police presence, so it would seem it was very much premeditated. Could very well be twatter bs though.

yea, it's definitely plausible with the amount of weapons, my post was more my gut feeling when I saw a name - quite pointless really and doesn't add anything to this.

The reload as well.  One, long round being fired off.  A 15 second pause.  The same again.

Just horrifying :(

You really do have to wonder how many more shootings need to happen before the US does something about it's gun problem.

That said, the number of pro-gun residents over there is staggering.

as mentioned, they did nothing when 26 toddlers were slaughtered. They're a **** mess of a country.
