So it was a fully automatic weapon? My understanding is that these are hard to get in the US? (as opposed to semi autos)

40 States still allow the purchase of fully automatic firearms including Nevada. The only thing they have in place to stop people is that they are taxed vastly higher than any other type of firearm. There was a proposed federal ban in 2015, but nothing has happened since the ban was proposed which is unsurprising the US loves their guns. So as long as this shooter could afford the gun then there was nothing stopping him getting one in Nevada. It sounds to me based on the footage he bought a 30-round Submachine Gun and went to town, it's crazy that fully auto weapons are still so easy to get but hey it's America.

50 dead, Oh my.

Its pretty amazing that the US Govenment are looking to the lengths of banning people from certain countries and building a bloody wall to contain a threat yet shootings like this go on without doing anything to stop them. Utter madness.

The problem here is that those people in the crowd didn't have fully automatic weapons.

If they did, they could have blasted this dude off to hell as soon as he started shooting. Guns are definitely a good thing for citizens to own. Never goes wrong.

Edit' Chindie beat me to it.

64 year old white bloke, no criminal record.

Pathetic that the thread lasted one page before being hijacked for an anti-muslim agenda.

Worst mass shooting in US history.

Can we have a **** sensible conversation on gun control now please??

The firearms law for the state of Nevada is a complete joke.

You can carry an assault rifle with no limit on the rounds you can carry. There is no waiting time for firearm purchases and private sales are okay.

There are no purchase permits and blue firearm registration cards are no longer required.

What the actual ****

How does an estimated death toll jump from 2 to 50?

2 was always a ridiculously low estimate. He could have aimed at the sky and killed more than 2 people.

I suspect 2 was the confirmed number of deaths from victims that had made it to hospital. There were pictures floating around of bodies all over the floor while people were posting about 2 confirmed deaths. :(

It likely takes time to comb over the scene. Once they know the killer and any accomplices are detained or dead then they know it's safe to start counting the dead, or looking for survivors. Initial reports were 2 dead which was likely as morbid as it is based on eye witness reports likely seeing someone die right in front of them, but as the bodies pile up it gets harder to know who is dead, who is injured and who is just lying down for safety. This happened at 1am it was dark and it takes time. The timeline thus far is 2 confirmed dead, then 20 and now 50. Lots of factors as to why the death toll can climb so fast though.

Ok, third time that joke has been done now in this thread plus hundreds of times in the other shootings threads. Fair to say it's run it's course.

The implications are enormous, probably as big as anything recently.

Any high building overlooking any crowded environment is now a problem worldwide.

Nope, just in the USA because that seems to be where all of these gun attacks actually happen. Also there's pretty much nothing you can do to stop these type of attacks logistically. If you walk down any street and open fire with a gun you are going to do serious damage. What you have to do is stop people getting the weapons in the first place but that's not going to happen either. The candles/grief/flowers/fallen heroes etc. will all be out and there'll be an outpouring of support for anyone affected but nothing will actually happen. There will be no gun control, sensible debate in US or anything meaningful. We just have to wait for the next mass shooting, if history is a pointer we won't have to wait long.

Striking resemblance to the Charles Whitman case. He famously climbed the Texas Uni clock tower and shot people from there. Thankfully he didn't have an enormous crowd to aim at like this word removed.
