Amavi, Ayew, Veretout, Gana can all stay. Add Adama into that for pure potential and the rest can **** off. It's called 'Life on the Volcano' and I'm probably a little late to the party as the book has been out for a while now - but it's a book made up of a number of interesting interviews with managers from the top league to the lower ones - about their managerial strategy, what they've seen, how they go about it etc I'm still early on in the book, but last night I read two fascinating chapters which by chance talked about a club and the way it acted can be compared with Villa - QPR. Shaun Derry at the time of the interview was manager of Notts County. At the time in question he was a midfielder for QPR. The team was a typical Neil Warnock team, playing not particularly nice football, but it was successful enough to get them promoted. QPR sacked Warnock early on and brought in Mark Hughes with the aim of 'modernizing' the club and it becoming something that it wasn't. Current players were sidelined, 'bomb squaded' and QPR brought in a number of players, often under the influence of Kia Joorabchian (who happened to be Hughes agent). They were good players but they didn't 'get' the club. It was all about the money. Derry tells a story about him being late into training due to traffic one day and Julio Cesar, then Brazil goalkeeper, was deadly serious in asking why Derry didn't just buy a helicopter. This sudden influx of many players may have been more talented, but they didn't 'get' the league. They didn't understand the club, or what was going on - and they struggled. Meanwhile, the players already at the club such as Derry had been alienated, were pissed off and a split existed between new and old. Not great for a team game. Mark Hughes actually talks about this in the next chapter. He more or less seems to agree with what went wrong and it's kind of helped reshape my opinion somewhat of the French lot that came in over the summer when you compare the two situations. Sure, we've got some bad eggs. I used to love Gabby. But the bloke hasn't been a top division striker for three years now. And to continually rub it in the faces of the fans of the club he supposedly supports himself (not the idiots abusing him on social media) by the constant stream of the bloke having photos of him partying etc isn't nice. I'm not saying he shouldn't be allowed to, but to perhaps tone it down might be a suggestion. Or, at the very least, as a professional athlete not to be drinking and smoking. He should be looking after his body. No surprise he picks up so many injuries. Richards, Lescott too. There is an attitude that seems to exist that they are better than this - they aren't. Guzan too - has let the ball drop (both physically and metaphorically) and it's cost us - Guzan in particular has probably lost us three or four games this season due to stupid errors he previously wouldn't have made a couple of years ago. We also have a second group of players - ones who seem to have their head screwed on - but just don't have the talent. Westwood, Clark, Hutton, Gestede, Vertout. They try but they aren't good enough. And you can't really complain at that. The third group for me is mainly the summer signing guys - Ayew, Gana, Adama, (what I saw of Amavi), possibly Grealish though there is a question mark on his attitude - players who have shown glimpses of talent but also demonstrated that they needed support from players around them to help them blossom. Unfortunately the bad eggs (which frustratingly includes both the 'team' and 'club' captain, seem to have decided to make it uncomfortable to them from my view point, whilst any split in camp that would have developed in the meanwhile makes the place an awkward place to be. These guys looked like they might be able to keep us up, but haven't done so. But they weren't given the help and support needed to be able to. It's because of that I still expect the man who put that recruitment plan into action to be fired, or, as Riley is a friend of Randy's - I suspect he may be 'moved down' to a different job until he finds somewhere else. I also think the silence is deafening from the players re: Garde's departure. Other than Grealish's immature Tweet, there has been nothing from the players about being sad to see Garde go - or even 'thanks, sorry for it not working out'. You usually get at least one or two. I suspect Garde had lost even the more mature, sensible players in the dressing room because he'd failed to deal with the idiots (or at least brought them back after the board's January failure). Only against Swansea for the 1st half hour dud I see any fight in him but that went soon enough. I'd keep him though just as an impact but doubt he'll be here long he hasn't the attitude or desire to play for us. He may suit Pearsons winger style though!! At this point, players will consider moving on. Until then, they'll happily cash their cheques. Hopefully a drastic decrease of 50% will bring them crashing back down to earth, and realising that they do have to care, at least on the pitch.
