Who Would be Next?

But what would be wrong with employing Pulis until he hit that ceiling and then looking for somebody who can take us from there?

I think a lot of us make the mistake of wanting our next manager to be the guy who leads us to the league title.

The truth is we are very VERY unlikely to find somebody like that who is willing to come here.

What we need to do is find somebody who can improve us as a team and establish us higher up the table. THEN the challenge will be letting that manager go before we stagnate and replacing him appropriately.

Southampton did it perfectly with Adkins and Pochettino.

The next manager doesn't have to be here for 10 years.

But Pulis' glass ceiling isn't really set much higher than Lambert's. As awful as Lambert is, I'd still expect him to keep us up this season. Okay, Pulis would probably do it a bit more comfortably but the outlook of the club will effectively be the same under him. I could understand such short-termism if we were mired deep in the abyss and desperately needed somebody like Pulis to dig us out but we aren't at that point, thankfully.

We've suffered through two of the most boring and retrograde managers you could ever wish for and I feel it is time for some fresh ideas and impetus. Something that will not be provided by Tony Pulis.

Fair enough, can't disagree with that.

I was more provoking discussion than shooting for Pulis.

I think at this stage any manager worth his salt will look at the situation and think again.

Moyes, Pulis etc. will be looking at a more stable and attractive proposition, unless Randy is deciding to stick around and invest.

Most likely for me would be Roy Keane, but this is just all ifs and buts as Randy will not sack Lambert less than 2 months after a brand new 4 year contract.

Steve Mclaren? Sean Dyche? Tim Sherwood? Thank God none of you are running the club.

Steve mclaren has achieved a lot more in football than villa have in last 2 decades. Failed with England but who doesn't. Wasn't great at forest and had an iffy stage towards the end of his boro tenure but also got them to a European final was it? Did he also win them a cup? Had fc twente as the dominant force in Dutch football and is doing well with derby, who play some cracking stuff from what I see.

Seems to be overlooked coz he stood with a brolly - when it was **** pissing it down and once talked in a Dutch accent.

We really are not in a position to be picky like we have been the last few times when we've been choosing managers.

In my opinion there is no chance that Moyes would 'drop down' to manage the likes of Villa after the UTD gig.

Would anyone take Nigel Pearson from Leicester? Granted they have money, but they didn't spend too much in the summer and they always play with a certain hunger which is sorely lacking at Villa.

It seems to me that he could ignite some fire in the bellies of our players, especially when we go 1-0 down after 10 minutes.

Thomas Tuchel?

Seems a progressive coach who has his own style and ideas, had Mainz punching well above their weight in the Bundesliga.

He specialises in counter-attacking football but importantly it isn't the one-dimensional, anti-technical and outdated brand that we have become accustomed to.

Any manager is going to look at the ownership situation and think 'I could be out of a job within weeks...'

Maybe our best bet would be to bring back a few ex-villans as a management team?

With a healthy pay off!

Seriously though, the Villa job is still a huge draw to people. One of the oldest and biggest names in English football. OK, we have lumbered around the last few years but we are still a name that most managers would jump at joining.

Jorge Sampaoli

I suggested him back in the summer. Would be a massive move for us. However, his style of play (and that of any modern coach) will take time to implement and would probably be best served coming in, in the summer with a pre season behind them. Therefore I would take Pullis until the end of the season as he would organise the team, get goals out of Benteke and hopefully keep us up. Whether he'd agree to coming in on that basis is another matter
