Better quality earphones don't leak as much sound. Their job is to put sound in your ears, not to let everyone else know that you own an Apple product. I agree, they are poor quality but they do the job for 95% of people who just want to listen to music occasionally on the train/bus. I don't think he was trying to let everyone know he owned an Apple product. I don't think the majority of people are that interested in what devices other people have?
