For what it’s worth I wanted Howe. Thought he did an unbelievable job at Bournemouth. Never expected him to do this well at Newcastle though. They’ll still probably **** him off once they get top 4.

edit: As for him getting manager of the year. Do you mean manager of calendar year and is that a thing ?

I mean manager of season.

Howes done a great job its unbelievable they have onky lost once this season and that was robbery against Liverpool  too

There form is Leicester(title win) esque.

Actually baffles me how they play so well.

At the end of last season, post Howe they were like 3rd on the form table.

They've stayed consistent for a very long time.

Leicester were similar in the season before they won it. Survived relegation battle with an incredible run in

Yeah, same. Their team/squad isn’t that good at all, yet there they are, 2nd in the league.

They’ve spent over £200m so of course their squad is good. Even the likes of Joelinton and Almiron weren’t cheap either. Howe has got them playing well, integrating more quality additions with a more rounded squad. An injury here and there will expose some of the quality gaps that remain, but it will remain interesting how they cope with more injuries.

Not being distracted by Europe was a big help to Leicester, and Newcastle are enjoying a similar situation this season with a packed schedule. They do have an outside chance of winning it.

Not a chance, City are too good, they'll catch arsenal too

I think they've got an outside chance of 4th but they won't get that either

They are right in the fight for top 4 - it's going to be interesting - only two of Liverpool, Spurs, Chelsea, Newcastle and Man Utd are going to get there.

At the moment my money is on Newcastle seeing it through, they don't have the same pressure on them that others on that list do. I think we might see a meltdown at one of the larger clubs, sackings and recriminations and players wanting out, all of that.

Newcastle may be the hollow vessel of a brutal regime, but it'll be fun seeing the big six explode.

Money does not = great squad.

I'm not even sure I'd place Newcastle in the top 10 teams in the league, on paper.  Howe is doing an incredible job.

Thing is, and this is the same with us and our spending, when you say they've spent £200m man City, Chelsea and utd are all over £1bn, Liverpool, spurs and arsenal are all north of £500m

Their spend relative to those clubs is nothing

No one ever wants to say the PL is poor because its just all so God damn exciting every week... But Newcastle are where they are because too many of the sky 6 haven't woken up yet this season

Leicester winning was exactly the same, everyone look at the fairytale don't dare look at these billion pound squads playing shit

Also, a few good buys can really make the difference to the overall picture.

Guimaraes and Botman for about £65m is outrageous. We could (should) have signed either but chose not to/didn't think they were worth the money/didn't know they were available for transfer/didn't know they existed. Delete however you fancy.

They'll either be leaving to a super power or will be with them for most of their career challenging for trophies.

Exactly this - £200m is a ridiculous amount of money to spend, but it's not that unusual. How much have Everton or Villa spent/wasted in the last 2/3 years without any apparent progress? Newcastle have spent money but have spent it really well and deployed the new signings into a system that suits them - almost like there's joined up thinking between how the club wants to play football and which players are needed to play that way. There's no reason Villa couldn't be in Newcastle's position - it's not PIF's billions that have transformed the club, it's the club's footballing philosophy.

Also, of the £200m, there's about £90m not even being used (Isak and Targett), so the first team has been rebuilt for around £110m. It's squad depth that Newcastle are lacking right now, and injuries could completely derail their season.

Would have been better off with Gerrard though

This could work. Newcastle must be kicking themselves.
