Xbox One

How much of the success of these new consoles will be dictated by being the first to be released? Or are people either 'PS' people or 'XBox' people at this stage? The reason I ask is because I wonder whether one will rush a release just to be on the shelf and shifting units (and dealing with any fallout from premature release (fnarr fnarr)).

I'm generally an Xbox person and would wait for the Xbox to be released before buying a PS4. Generally the reason for it is I have more friends on Xbox and I prefer the Xbox pads. Though, if they still charge for Xbox Live and don't offer something different to the PSNetwork which is free then I will consider a PS4. Also, if the ability to play second hand games goes away then I will consider PS4. I think the ideas which Microsoft are rumored to be implementing will be implemented eventually, it's just too early to do it now.  It would be suicide to implement them in the next-gen of consoles without Sony doing it too.

If Sony do it too... then we'll all just have to "deal with it".

Oh, he was just dicking around, That seems ever so slightly more professional...

If I pulled shit like this on a public social media account that references the company I worked for, I'd be out on my arse.

For anyone that was not already aware, and looking for some added context to the above, Manveer Heir works for Bioware.

If it is true that he was just joking, and frankly I have no reason to believe he wasn't, he must be laughing himself silly right now.

It's funny that he made his Twitter account private after that. Either it was a joke or he got in some serious shit and is trying to backtrack.

Next gen Xbox ‘is going to be expensive’, reveal pushed back to May says insider

Another rumour claims that the Xbox 720 requires a permanent Internet connection, and that it will not be backwards compatible with the Xbox 360.

Although the controversial comments by Microsoft Studios creative director Adam Orth already seem to confirm that the new Xbox 360 will be ‘always-online’ another new source has suggested the same thing – and more besides.

According to well-known Microsoft Paul Thurrott, speaking on web show What The Tech, the new Xbox will be revealed on Thursday, May 21. That’s almost a month later than the expected late April reveal, although Thurrott wasn’t explicit about what the delay is for.

However, it’s possible it could be a reaction to Sony’s unveiling of the PlayStation 4, which presented the console as a much more games-focused device than Microsoft is rumoured to be planning.

The new console is claimed to be aiming for a November release date, at least in the U.S., and ‘is going to be expensive’ at around $500. That works out £325, but due to the usual import and currency issues that’s likely to be at least £400 in the UK and probably closer to £500.

Given the high price (rumoured to be because of the inclusion of Kinect 2 as standard) Thurrott suggests that a $300 (£195) subscription model will also be released. That’s something Microsoft has already experimented with in the U.S., where the Xbox 360 can be bought more cheaply as long as you also sign up to Xbox Live for two years.

Thurrott also mentions a non-gaming version of the new console codenamed Yumo, something that has been rumoured for some time as a set-top box for streaming movies and music. It’s claimed plans for the hardware haven’t been abandoned but that it won’t be out this year.

A new $99 (£64) version of the Xbox 360 will be released this year though, which Thurrott speculates is compensation for the fact that the next generation Xbox is not backwards compatible.

Video games aren’t necessarily Thurrott’s specialist subject though and he does seem to underestimate the controversy over whether the new console requires a permanent Internet connection or not.

‘Going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says ‘must be Internet-connected to use’ in the notes. And that’s all I have, but it does say that,’ he commented.

‘For me, Xbox 360 is almost entirely an online experience. Most of the games I play are multiplayer, where you’re playing against other people online. Or you’re using it as an entertainment device when you’re connected to a service like Netflix or Xbox Video, so that is an Internet-connected device. In this phrase, it says ‘must be Internet-connected to use’, you know, that suggests that you can’t even boot into the UI and play – I don’t know, I don’t know, I don’t have one.’

If true many of these details are likely to prove unpopular with gamers, but Thurrott is extremely upbeat:

‘I look at all this stuff that I’ve seen and I think, ‘It’s all positive.’ I don’t really see any bad news here at all. To me, everything I’ve seen about this is really positive. It’s amazing to me that, based on no information at all, everyone is like freaking out about everything. Aside from this online thing.’

Source.

Disregard the always on internet, no backwards compatibility, being less 'game focused' than PS4 - ~£500 on release? man.

I've never used any Xbox live services and only recently got live to play halo 4 online, up to that point I coped fine with offline play thank you very much.

I'm gettin a bit sick of Microsoft telling me exactly what I want, it's supposed to work the other way round you idiots!

PS4 is a no brainer regardless of price imo. MS is diddling themselves royally with this "it's an entertainment system, not a gaming system" approach they're going to be flinging in everyone's faces from next month onwards

I think the point being made is that a lot of gamers just want it to play games and that by making it an 'entertainment system' and thus giving it more features, it will be more expensive. People will have to fork out that money just to use it as a games console and many wouldn't use the other features, so it's a bit annoying.

Especially as when in the UK and you go to use half of the exciting new rad, awesome sick cool entertainment features MS promise in their expo 'shows' and your then greeted with a 'content not yet available in your region' cockblocking message.

PS4 for me on what I've heard so far, could still change depending on what ms have up their sleeve, would have to be something pretty special but the signs aren't looking good.

I just cannot use a PS2/3/4 controller. They hurt my hands.

Think i'll still go Xbox - mostly because all my friends will too.

M$ have to do something with XBLive to justify making customers spending money on it, or make it free like the PSNetwork.
