Not defending The Sun, but the legal age of topless modelling was 16 up until 2003, when it was increased to 18. At that point, it meant the older issues of The Sun and porn magazines, become potentially illegal material if it featured 16 or 17 year olds.

Didn’t they do the same thing with Emma Watson? Counting down until she was 16. Not in preparation for any kind of modelling just in a “look she’s legal now” way. Just super creepy.

Pains me to (possibly) defend the sun.

I’m not totally sure the countdown to X turning 16 actually happened in the sun.

Try and look it up. For something that we all think happened, there’s a weird absence of images of scummy pages with some sort of calendar saying “four days until she’s 16, guys!!!” or similar. There doesn’t appear to evidence beyond people saying “Yeah I remember them doing that…”.

I found an article saying that the guardian issued a correction in regards to this countdown story about Charlotte Church. There’s another thing about the behaviour of the paparazzi when Emma Watson turned 18.

But I don’t know, everyone seems to think it happened. There were seemingly countdowns online. I don’t know if that’s being conflated with sun articles about Charlotte Church and Emma Watson when they were 15 that were sexually charged in their nature. I’m much more ready to believe that the sun often sexualised Church and Watson when they were underage.

With regards Moyles and Church I did get that wrong. Seemingly he offered to take her virginity when she was 16. Will have a look for the countdown thing as it rings a very loud bell.

I remember when i was 21 i went to boston for my friends wedding.

I went to see my friends parents one day and i copy of the suns newspaper. Her dad asked me if he could read the paper as he had nevee seen a UK paper before and was interested to see how it tallies to the states one. He read the main headline then turned the page over to page 3. He was shocked to see a topless woman. He said he couldnt believe we were allowed to put that into a national paper as that would never be allowed over there

I used to take a mild interest every hot summer when the headline would appear “phew, what a scorcher” and would have some hotties “frolicking”  on Bournemouth beach, one of which one would maybe go on to be a page three star

Well another story i had my same friends over last year and i thiught it would be funny just to see their reaction, so i put in naked attraction and lets just say although they found it hilarious were stunned this was on normal tv at 10pm

it was when she was like 14 or 15 i think...i can't remember exactly the language used (i don't think it was a 'countdown'), but even back then i thought "this is well creepy" because it was describing her in a suggestive way when she was still underage

with regards to the suggested countdowns (certainly in the cases of charlotte church and emma watson), i just looked them up and the guardian actually had to print apologies to the s*n for suggesting it was them, when actually they appeared on some anonymous website
