A long time ago, 4 of us entered a water-skiing competition in Norfolk, in October. We lived in Cornwall. We borrowed a big tent and booked a campsite. To make sure we could erect the tent the owner had helpfully numbered all the many poles with little bits of masking tape. We travelled to Norfolk in 2 cars, seperately. In my car was the ski-kit and in the other was the tent. 2 of us in my car arrived at destination camp site mid afternoon and waited around for half hour or so, but no sign of other car. So we said to the site owner "where's the nearest pub...and can you tell our mates where we are going to be if they turn up in the next couple of hours?" yeah, no problem... after 2 hours supping, we walked back to campsite, still no sign of t'other car. talk to campsite owner again "we're going back to the pub ...can you direct the other car to us when it turns up..." at kicking out time, and now somewhat the worse for wear, we wandered back to the campsite. It's cold, it's starting to rain. Still no car or tent. "Hello campsite owner...er, could we possibly use an empty caravan for the night because...no tent etc." "yeah no worries - use this one, it's got a heater" Other Car turns up, midnight just as we're about to close the cosy caravan door. So, pitch black, it's raining, it's cold, two drunks and two weary blokes who've spent all day breaking down and fixing a car on a 250 mile+ journey on a friday night. The task is erecting a tent , we've never set up before. The rain washing all the numbers off the pole labels. after half an hour of incompetence and frustration the result was give up. The two sober ones: 1 kips in car, 1 kips in toilet block. Drunk ones: get tent outer, lie it on grass, get in sleeping bags, fold other half of tent over the sleepers to keep (most of) the rain off. It went behind the TVs unit and we were trying to get the little bugger for about 20 minutes. The way we did it was prod the wires behind the unit with a umbrella then run onto the sofa in case it came running out. We looked a right pair of clearings in the woods. Got him in the end though.
