Confirmed: Houllier is the new Villa manager

I would be reasonably happy with Sven. Stephen Ireland played his best football under Sven at City, Sven knows the european transfer market well, and he has been relatively successful wherever he's been. Not sure who we could attract any better tbh.

I think we're all putting too much weight behind the significance of odds after what happened with Oneill on monday.

That said, I tempted fate a bit too much last time by insisting that I'd bed a donkey if Oneill had infact left, therefore...

Martin Jol will NOT be coming, i can guarantee you this, I would stake my house on it.

I'll bloody well bed a gorilla if this is true ;-)

This place is gonna end up like Animal Farm soon!

Appointing Sven will be a desperate measure, yes he has won trophies in the past ,how many years ago? The game has moved on.

He is a job hopper & carries too much baggage.

The new Manager will be our biggest signing of the summer now, the cost should not matter we need to get the right man to take us forward.

Hiddink is the man - pay the money - it talks!

I'm just preparing myself for the worse and just trying to get behind and see where we go whoever.

Even Mark HUghes who i despise i would just have to grin and bare it.

Whoever we get people are going to kick off, well apart from Jol who we wont get unfortunately.

I hope we're well on with a shortlist though.

WTF!!!

Why are people still talking about Mark Hughes?!?

He's just signed for Fulham FFS, like one whole frickin week ago.

Same goes for McLaren who has this summer signed on in Germany (always forget who with, want to say Werder Bremen but it isn't them is it?)

For Villa's next manager look to who is currently out of work, for me the next manager will come from one of:

Alan Curbishley (most likely IMO, sadly)

Sven (least likely IMO, thank fk)

Jurgen Klinsmann (would love to see)

Gareth Southgate (would hate to see)

We have no money, that much is apparent, the likes of Hiddink etc would have no interest in managing us with no funds available, so we can forget about that standard of manager.

Bring in javier Aguirre. Speaks English. Got Atletico to Champions League for 1st time in 11 years, did a brilliant job at Osasuna getting to Champions League qualifiers. Has international pedigree at Mexico and not afraid to deal with ego's like he did with Maniche

Isn't he well racist?

Could be confusing him with someone else tho........

MacDonald: I'm honoured to boss Villa

Kevin MacDonald insists he is "very honoured" to be managing Villa - and has pledged everyone will start with a fresh slate.

MacDonald, who replaced Martin O'Neill in the hot-seat on a temporary basis this week, is excited as he looks forward to leading the claret and blue troops into their top-flight opener against West Ham.

And he said the whole squad would be taken into consideration when he picks his team for the weekend clash - including the young lions he has nurtured during his many years as reserve boss.

He told AVTV: "I feel very honoured, really honoured, having been here a long time.

"Whether that was one of the reasons I was asked, I don't know.

"I genuinely feel really honoured, particularly when I look back at some of the experienced managers who have been here before me.

"Whether it lasts for a long time or short time, who knows? But to think I have been in the same position they have been in, I am very proud.

"Of course, I am excited - it's a big thing. It's the Premier League, it's the start of the season and hopefully a packed Villa Park with fans that are vocal and cheering their team to victory.

"If you don't get excited by that, what do you get excited by?"

MacDonald revealed he is working with under-18 coach Tony McAndrew this week to get the players ready for the weekend game, with several backroom staff involved in other roles as a result of former boss O'Neill's departure.

He continued: "Obviously it was a major surprise to a certain extent when we found out Martin resigned. Paul [Faulkner, Villa chief executive] called me in and offered me the chance to be caretaker manager for the West Ham game and then see what happens.

"Obviously with other staff leaving, we have moved Tony McAndrew up to work with myself, Gordon Cowans and Sean Verity to work with the reserves and Steve Burns and Ben Petty to work with the youth team.

"We were a bit lucky in that it's international week so we didn't have the normal amount of bodies we'd usually have. There were one or two injuries too.

"We trained yesterday and we trained very brightly. They have had today off and hopefully they'll be back in tomorrow and they'll be nice and lively and I hope the internationals who come back return uninjured.

"Obviously working with Martin - especially in pre-season during the Peace Cup - gave me an insight into what it takes to be a Premier League manager and how you have to affect the players.

"Obviously one or two will be a little bit happier than others because they haven't been getting a game.

"The thing they have to realise is they have to be playing to the best of their ability to get into the team.

"Just because they haven't been getting a game doesn't mean I'm going to pick them. I'll pick what I think is the right team - in my opinion - to win the game on Saturday against West Ham.

"Everyone starts with a fresh slate, of course. You have to remember too that, having worked with a lot of the young players over the years, I'll look on them as potential players.

"It's not just the first team squad - there's also a group of youngsters that are knocking on the door of that first team squad. Who knows what might happen?"

MacDonald also paid tribute to departing O'Neill, who he insisted had nurtured a "winning mentality" at the club.

He added: "We have had the winning mentality with the reserves but it's important to realise that's been with the first team too over the past few seasons.

"We have finished sixth three years in a row. Whether it's come from the first team, from the former gaffer down to ourselves and the youth team, we have had it there.

"But obviously we have had it pushed into us from Martin because we have done so well under him here over the past three or four years.

"There's a big thing about the education he's given us - the reserves, the youth team coaches - as well. Let's hope it stands us in good stead."

So what do we think? Save money and go for Lee Clark, Sean O'Driscoll or Paulo Sousa or pay Jol etc what MON was on?

At least the Americans or Ralf Rangnick might only command a medium wage...

Still trying to work out how much doom and gloom we are in, my friend thinks we should just go with Cowans and play

Siegrist, Lichaj, Davies, Warnock, Clarke. Young, Albrighton, Delph (Bannan), Downing, Gabby and Delf and make sure we dont go down.

Funny lad.....

Javier Aguirre, interesting call, forgot all about him.

I'm pleased that he's been given this chance but I don't see him as the longer term manager. From what he says above, I feel he's still continuing his education and may like to be considered but doesn't expect it. That said, it might all come down to money and Villa take the cheaper option. There aren't too many "wow" readily available Managers out there at the moment are there?

The more i see the options / who's likely avaliable, the more i favour Sven actually.

I most certainly would not want Southgate as he couldn't even keep Boro up for goodness sake & he ditched on us in a player version of MON.

I would not want Bradley either especially after hearing an interview on talksport with an American guy who knew him personally & basically said he was not ready for such a big step up!

Curbishley fiils me with dread as he is just Mr average all round or a decent manager for a very average club a la Charlton!

So that leaves

Jol

Klinsman

Sven

Martinez

Hughes

Hughes is surely out of the question having not even started at Fulham & i would not really be that excited if he came anyway tbh.

Martinez.... Well just not ready for me

That leaves 3

Jol

Klinsman

Sven

Any of these would be interesting in my opinion though you have to say Klinsman would be an "unknown" & a bit of a gamble?

I just think Sven would love the chance to put one over Man City after the way they disposed of him when he had actually done a decent job? & he has the tactical nouse we have been lacking surely? Plus the ability & network to work the World transfer market to our advantage? I also think in this situation his knowledge & massive experience is exactly what we need to steady the ship & stop everyone jumping ship which is surely now the biggest threat?

I think Jol is the ideal candidate, and I hope we attempt to capture him.

I agree that's he the ideal candidate.

But I don't see it happening since Ajax would want 12m euros in compensation and Lerner appears to want to cut back on spending, not increase it.

If I had to guess, I'd guess you'll end up with Sven.

1st i heard but i found this on a story about him

During the run up to the World Cup Aguirre expressed his desire to coach in the English Premier League, but he received no offers and as of August 2010 he remained unemployed
