HanoiVillan
Why it's so **** wet all the time at the moment? It's supposed to be summer FFS. We had a flash flood at work. Ceiling crashed down in one of the rooms, water literally gushing down. We're on the second floor of a six-floor building.

Yup, drove home in it an hour or so ago. Should take ten minutes out of the city centre, took half an hour. When I got close to my road there were a few dips flooded with a few inches of rain already. Mental.
Popular Post Ginko
Had a cracker today from one of the girls in our department. Nice girl but stubborn, she's not as dumb as this is about to make her out as, she's just daft apparently. So we're talking about the traffic that morning and how it took a couple of us a bit longer to get into work than usual. She pipes up telling us about how when she worked at her previous place she had a 20 minute commute which would often take her closer to 45 minutes because the traffic was that bad around 8:30am-ish when she'd leave her house. "So sometimes I'd get in fifteen minutes or more late even after leaving at the normal time, so I decided to leave later so the traffic wasn't so bad and sometimes I'd even get there earlier than if I'd have left at the normal time!" Well, you wouldn't, would you? You can't leave later and arrive earlier when you're travelling the same route unless you stopped off to have a nap or something. "What? Yeah, I did, I did it quite a few times. Because the traffic has cleared up by that time so it was a clear route straight through." The same traffic you would be sat in if you had left at the earlier time, you mean? That traffic would have gotten to work leaving the road clear for you and you'd still arrive earlier at work than had you left at the earlier time and been sat IN THAT VERY TRAFFIC? Did you overtake yourself somehow? Did you open up a wormhole by leaving later? "What? Shut up you're all annoying me now. You weren't there! I did it loads of times! You can't say that because you weren't there experiencing it!" Experiencing what? Time travel? I've been stuck in traffic before and unless you're stopping off for a rest or something it is impossible for you to arrive somewhere earlier when leaving later if you're travelling the exact same route. What you're experiencing is less time in the car and therefore a shorter journey. What you are not doing is defying space and time by arriving earlier. We gave up trying to explain it when we felt we had to resort to using the assortment of figures on our desks as a diagram. Think she felt a bit patronised Edited June 15, 2016 by Ginko

Davkaus
I mean, you can't get there faster than if you'd left earlier and been stuck in traffic on that specific day, but the assumption is that the levels of traffic are the same every day, which obviously isn't correct. You could easily get there earlier, leaving later, on days on which the traffic doesn't happen to be as bad as the previous day on which you'd sat there in traffic for considerably longer. Taking over twice as long for a very short commute, yeah, that sounds like Nottingham alright

mjmooney Posted June 20, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted June 20, 2016 Does Private Eye still do "Pseud's Corner"? Just get this classic about Rupert Bear annuals in Saturday's Guardian review section: "Rupert's pages are full of the chthonic unquiet; the weird figure, including that ambulatory tree and Raggety, the avatar of unfriendly undergrowth; hedgerow gnosis; and, repeatedly, the existentially destabilising dark sublime. Nutwood is a place of the most thoroughgoing, frankly twee picturesque - and it borders an infinite void".
