Dune was brilliant. I loved the style, pitch and tone of it and thought it was well casted.

Mrs TBA thought it was a little dull :(

tbh i can see why people might think it was slow, but it had to be a little to try and build the world, remind her its only part 1, I'm sure it will pick up in part 2 :)

I will have to wait for the home release for Dune unfortunately.

Gutting as it's probably the movie I most wanted to see in years.

gotta say, i find it annoying that its available on HBO in the US, but we can get HBO in the UK....

I'm irrationally excited about this considering it's a film I've already seen!

was it good in IMAX then?

I went to the cinema to see it, but it was your old school type cinema, not imax :(

Yeah it was excellent. Sound and visuals are incredible. That scene where

Spoiler

the Harkonnen first return to Arrakis to attack Atreides

looked and sounded amazing.

Stood up to second viewing as well. Noticed some things I didn't notice first time round.

I understood a lot more about

Spoiler

How it was the spice making Paul hallucinate outside the harvester and in the tent giving him the visions

That's probably quite obvious but I didn't really grasp it first time round

Many years I have waited
For this film adaptation to appear
Why, I predict Jon Chu could make this
Magic grand vizier!
My Dears, my dears
I'll post at once to VT
Tell them of this in advance
With talent like theirs there is a definish chance
If they work as they should
This will be Wicked good

I actually don't think I've ever heard Cynthia Erivo sing, so perhaps something to look in to, but I really have liked her performances in a few bits I've seen her in (Widows and The Outsider). She's also going to be in the Pinocchio live action and Luther films, apparently. As far as this movie adaptation goes, they're really the only castings that matter - just get people who can sing relatively well and they'll be set.

IMO if gaming gets its own section then TV and films probably could do with one too, maybe music aswell

Both would be more popular than gaming

Yeah I 100% agree with this to be fair

More Bond talk.

Finally got round to watching Die Another Day. The theme song is an absolute disgrace. Madonna should never have been let back in the country for that verbal arse chowder alone. Film wise, the first hour or so was actually really good then they just seem to flick the switch to ‘Harry Maguire mode’ and had to go and introduce the real villain, the worst fencing routine ever, the **** stupid ice palace and that daft as **** super weapon lol. Oh dear. Anyway, it’s over now.

We watched Casino Royale last night and all was right with the world again. QoS this weekend.

@useless

Just a quick follow on to your post about The Innocents. Have you seen the Robert Wise 1963 version of The Haunting? If not I think you might like it.

Based on the Shirley Jackson novel Haunting of Hill House, it's a superbly atmospheric ghost story with some of the best use of sound I've ever come across. Really good film.

What is "Wicked"?

Is it a Wizard of Oz musical?

It's a musical prequel to the Wizard of Oz, written focusing on the Wicked Witch. It's been a massive success on stage.

Excellent. I hate musicals,

Now, who is Cynthia Erivo?

English stage actress who made it big in the US with some Broadway performances, which then lead to some movie work, most notably an historic drama on the high profile abolitionist Harriet Tubman where she got an Oscar nod, but never really hit over here as she's not a figure in our history.

She's not really a thing outside of the US, but over there she's got a decent presence due to her Broadway success.

As a big fan of the book, Dune was very good. I just love Villaneuve's style. Visually stunning, but also you can tell he's a very big fan of the series as most of it pretty much nails the feel of the book. My only major gripe is:

Spoiler

He completely axed the whole intrigue on who the "traitor" among the Atreides was. That was a major part of the plot during their brief stay in Arakeen. Also no real indication that Leto knew he was brought to Arrakis to die apart from that one line to Jessica "I wish we had more time". That little political tug of war before the Harkonnens attacked is what made the whole attack + escape more satisfying in the books. In the movie the Harkonnens just descend on Arrakeen out of nowhere and we find out Yueh is the traitor with almost zero indication beforehand.

This.  Brilliant film.  Villaneuve's style fit the book brilliantly...  The bleak, foreboding doom you feel building up slowly throughout the film was fantastically done.

I wish I could see it again, but it's already leaving theaters. I can't wait for the Blu-Ray release, preferably a Director's Cut. The more scenes the better.

And sequel! And retelling of bits of Wizard of Oz itself. It'll be interesting how / if they address that, as on stage they completely ignore the story beats which don't match to the original story. It doesn't matter, obviously.

A cinema going audience, though, may be more attuned to noticing the inconsistencies. Assuming it's a scene for scene big screen version, of course. Which it might not be.

I'm an enormous fan of the musical production, but the books the musical are based on are a bit of a mess from what I can gather.

My wife was in the Broadway Orchestra and I played there a lot too. I have a soft spot for the show and I'm excited to see what they do with the movie. A lot of the tunes have grown on me over the years. There are actually a lot of prevalent points in the story that resonate loudly in today's world of Trump, racism and fake news BS.

Also the beginning of the VT meme of 'no socks Stevo' was when  @Stevo985 came to NYC and I gave him a backstage tour (KW please.) There's a pic of me and him - I am wearing knee high, rat-repellant, steel toe-capped winter clogger boots. Stevo is in loafers sans socks the goddamn big girls blouse.
