I disagree, we need someone who’s equally as good as a dedicated DM and pushes Kamara to be better or can replace him without a drop off in quality. No one bar Martinez should be guaranteed the shirt - competition breeds improvement and if Kamara drops his form he’ll know he’s gunna be out the team and have to earn the shirt back on the pitch and training ground.

When you look at how the top teams have recruited, and where Villa are found lacking at times, you can see why certain reliable folks are saying the club are prioritising players that are tall, athletic and generally well-rounded. The squad does lack these qualities generally so at times we can look really easy to play against.

It's why I can believe that someone like Fofana is on the list, because while not an out-and-out DM he's still got the qualities to cover for a player like Kamara while also being able to play alongside him etc.

Height, strength and pace is a must whoever we bring in imo. And some right footed players would be good considering we've got a world record amount of lefties in the squad.

Defence is clearly an issue. A quality DM will help enormously given Kamara's injury but I also feel we need a couple of new full backs and a centre back.

Yep these if we get champions league are a must.Kamara cover is obvious. Digne and Cash have both been decent enough this year, but as opposition improves they will struggle.

Yeah, the defence is looking shambolic right now, nowhere near as assured as it was last season and earlier in this one. I think some is down to not having a settled back line thanks to injuries, but also a lot of that is down to the protection in front of them not being as good as it was with Kamara and Luiz combining to mop up in front of them. I am wondering whether we will be in for Mikel Merino who we were linked with in Unai's first window, or whether Monchi has someone else lined up?

I agree with those asking for a dedicated DM. I believe Kamara is a dedicated DM. It's definitely his best role. But he has missed at least 2 months per season since he has been with us. And we need someone good enough to have him constantly looking over his shoulder at least.

If we get the 4th Champions league spot (which is looking likely) we will need that squad depth.

We also should have 5 centre backs and 2 specialist full backs for each flank. Currently we lack 1 right back and the 5th CB is out for the season.

If Carlos is really going to move on that means 2 centre backs, a right back, and DM, and hopefully another left CM / wide forward hybrid type like Ramsey. This is because I believe Rogers is best in the middle behind the striker.

4 players we need who are at the standard of our first team players in quality to compete in the champions league and go for 4th or higher. As well as aiming to go deep in the cups.

That El Kaabi  looked decent last night, might offer another option up front and he probably wouldn't cost the earth, given he's already 30.
