Summer Transfer Window 2023

OK, it seems there is a week left and with player outs we have quite a few £€ that we could spend (some suggested we had as much as £160m this window before sales). We’ve lost 2 key players and still needed an AM/#10 and forward (in fact more so with Archer leaving).

i can only assume we are working on some big deals as the final moves unfold elsewhere leaving the options for players to narrow, otherwise I have to say what is at stake and what money is available, to do nothing would seem like a seriously missed opportunity to double down on our momentum and given our now certain additional burden of the Conference league.

Digne is signed until 2026. We don't need to worry about him. The striker thing is nonsense. Duran isn't our back up last resort striker. Diaby can play there. Emery said he can. Man City have no back up striker to Haaland. Alvarez is less of back up striker than Diaby.

Unnecessary.

I think we need 2 more important sign: RB (urgenty) and Striker (Loan?), Less important can wait until jan window or next season: Maybe DM and GK

Let's look at rotate:

GK:
Martinez / Olsen (UGR) <- Need Replacement

DR:
Cash / Need Sign
DC:
Konsa/Mings (Chamber cover for him until he returns out of season - loan?)
Diego/Pau
DL:
Moreno (He will back soon)/Dignes

DM:
Kamara/Dend(UGR) <- Need replacement for him (Note Iroegbunam will be back soon I would replace Dend with him) still need to sign a new player to rotate with Kamara
CM:
Luiz /Tielemans
RM:
Mcginn / Zaniolo
LM:
Ramsey / Bailey (or Traore)
AM:
Coutinho (UGR) / Buendia (out of season - need sign back up? to replace counitho)

FW:
Watkins / Duran (need experience striker back watkins to give Duran time)
FR:
Diaby / Traore (I would play JPB indeed)

Sell Traore, Dend, Countiho to extra fund to buy players.

Not sure we play both CAM and FR.

Unless anyone can correct me?

So that position we have  diaby, zaniolo, traore?

I'll give you that but Traore has played as many. People obsess about back up striker when Emery has said Watkins will lead the line and PL teams don't rely on strikers like they used to. Arsenal almost won the league last seen with bulk goals coming from Saka Marinelli and Odegaard. Jesus was injured most the season and now again and they put Trossard up front and now Nketia who's bang average

I don't think many people are obsessed about a backup striker at all.  I think all that most people have said is where do the goals come from if Ollie gets injured?  Diaby has already helped address that.  Zaniolo will probably help too.  But if you play Diaby through the middle it will completely change the way that we try and play.  I think we need another attacker but it should be someone who can play in a team with Ollie and NOT only if Ollie gets injured.  Maybe a player like Ferran Torres - which would give us the option of playing Ferran, Ollie and Diaby as a front three (in the way that we lined up against both Everton and Hibs).  It gives us the option to rotate Zaniolo and possibly Bailey (who I still think has been written off too soon by many on here).  Then if Ollie is injured we've still got a front three of Ferran, Zaniolo and Diaby with Bailey / Duran / Couts offering cover.  None are an exact replacement but like you say - as long as you can add an attacking / goal scoring threat from elsewhere that's fine.  Those three would give different out balls to our defence / midfield without a massive change to the way we play.  Plus we could feasibly play all of them during the same game (not at the same time) to aid rotation / keeping people fit and without reducing our attacking threat.  When we play a slightly more conservative formation then Torres, Zaniolo and Ramsey give us options for adding more protection.

I do think that Emery wants plays who can play in different positions / roles as it maximises cover / tactical options without overloading the squad with "back-up" specialists.

A lot of people saying we need a replacement for Olsen. Personally, I agree.

But....I don't think the clubs does.

We have good young keepers coming through, and are loaning them out to get them experience.
Olsen has worried us all - but, Unai has improved players from the minute he walked through the door. Why can he not improve Olsen?

A reserve keeper is a unique role, and whilst the players seemed (past tense) a bit nervous with Olsen in goal, is that still the case, and would a realistic new 2nd choice be any better?
We have spent a bloody fortune on keepers over the last 6 years; maybe what we've got is good enough for a handful of games?

A cheap back-up that has plenty of Prem experience, wouldn't cost a packet and would come? How about Iheanacho at Leicester? Would know that he'd be on the bench for a while but would be a threat from the bench when needed. Imagine him v Hibs next week also instead of Watkins - you've fancy him to notch. Also, he'd be a perfect role model for Duran, both having left their countries and come from a different continent and culture in their teens. Duran could learn from him. He'd probably cost less than the reported Archer fee.

i'm notice Unai sometime tactical changing during match.

something like that free roles which bailey / diaby take anywhere roam with a forward pair with watkins.

some time they draft to winger that RM / LM move to centre midfield. Ie Mcginn / Ramsey do it when free roles move wide that Mcginn / Ramsey move attack centre midfield or sit centre midfield with luiz (if he sit so kamara drop DM or CH - full back bomb 1) overlap "Cash" 1) far wide to wait for receive long ball switch to attack other side "Digne".

also some time Centre midfield roles or  natural AM players in zone 10 to feed the Striker also passing to create to "Half-space" winger ie diaby / bailey which buendia did in pre-season.

might I be wrong with this?

The main issue with Olsen is that his distribution is terrible. His presence literally means we cannot play the possession based football that we want to.

If he is given significant game time, we will end up exiting at least one cup competition due to him this year if he is not replaced.

Sorry - as much as Olsen worries me - you just can't predict that

He is an Aston Villa player. If the manager trusts him, he must have his reasons.

I would be surprised if he plays in more than 10 games this season - he's played in 1, and kept a clean sheet. I suspect he'll play next Thursday - hopefully 2 for 2!
Any keeper we could realistically sign would leave us praying that Emi doesn't get injured.

I know it's minor and that he may well be fit for Sunday. But Emis injury is exactly why we should've had an Olsen replacement right up there on the list of requirements this summer.

This has been covered a lot, but when you have such a dominant no.1 keeper, it's very difficult to bring in a backup that is good enough to play regularly, but knows he won't.

Anyone that is likely to come here knowing he'll be sat on the bench, will have flaws in his game. With Olsen, Unai has been able to work with him for 9 months now, so he knows how to step in and maintain our style of play.

I honestly think some people think we could bring in a keeper near in quality to Emi, but expect him to be happy to sit on his arse except for the odd League Cup game.

We are trying as well to be intelligent and smart in the last days of the transfer window if we need something more. And if someone is leaving as well."

Unai confirmed he’s very happy with the left back options and doesn’t expect Digne to leave especially with Acuna injured

He’s not going to come out and say he isn’t happy with our left back options though is he?

Also, I’m fairly sure he said Digne could leave given he has a very good offer he’s happy with.

Unai hasn’t linked his exit with Acuna either way.

Maybe 1 more player to come in? We're very short on a right-footed attacker that can play on the left. JJ will play the majority of those games when he comes back and we have McGinn filling in but that's about it.

Sounds like we will look to add 1 or 2 more going off Unai's comments in the article, won't be direct replacements for Ty and Emi so sounds like we are looking for flexible options who can play multiple positions.

Also seemed to confirm Archer, JPB and Aaron Ramsay are all on their way out but with the hope they can come back via buy back clauses.

Maybe a loan and a big name forward option at the last minute like a Ferran Torres, Felix or similar is my guess.
