Him slouching in his chair with a couple of minutes to go would be good for a meme. I wonder what he was thinking?

"What the hell are they trying to do out there".

The subs coming on and making no impact at all was worrying. Too late, wrong subs??

The worrying thing for me was that Watkins was apparently about to be replaced before his 'goal', yet he didn't come off until 11 minutes after it. Why? Fair enough 4 were probably taken up by the VAR check but that would still be 7 minutes too late bringing him off.

Thinking  about it, we've had some stinkers this season . Watford and Arsenal, away. West Ham at home. We just cannot maintain momentum.

Even in games we have a tendency to surrender momentum far to often. It's almost like a lack of belief in their ability. It really is fustrating being a supporter of this club.

just start accepting that we'll get a couple of results that go against expectations and it really becomes less frustrating.

Today, any momentum was destroyed every time by constant stops and starts. The peak was when Villa finally seemed to get some pressure and suddenly the ref stopped for some medical energency. Either Newcastle got lucky with all of that or it was superb gamesmanship…

I want Gerrard to do well with us, he’s our manager and leader.  I want the players to do well.  We aren’t doing any of this the last couple of months, there is no narrative I just want better.

I haven't read the rest of this thread yet, so apologies if I'm going over stuff that's already been said.

We were poor, and not just poor but poor in the ways we weren't expecting to be poor.

Tactically, we only have two ways out of our own half, either we get the ball to Douglas Luiz and he plays passes into Coutinho or Buendia, or Mings puts a long pass into the corner for the full backs to chase. Oddly I thought the two players that are key to that both had good games (and along with Coutinho, I thought only Luiz and Mings had good games).

Firstly, we need more than two ways to do that, it gets predictable and that makes it easier to defend but more importantly we need to evaluate where that's getting us - Coutinho and Buendia were having to come so deep to get those balls from Luiz that they aren't being picked up by the deeper lying Newcastle players - which means when Coutinho turns he has two options - Watkins who is behind a defensive midfielder and up against two central defenders or playing the ball into the corner for the full backs - neither of those worked today. At all. Our (rare) moments of attacking threat were due to midfielders running at the Newcastle defence - and that doesn't seem to be in the main plan.

Physically, we were second best all day, Newcastle were notably bigger than us and when long balls were played forward, they were almost always either quicker or stronger than our fullbacks or Watkins. We can't win long balls and we don't seem to have options to play short balls in the opposition half.

Individually, Luiz was very good in the first half; he's the only player that gets us over the halfway line with the ball. Mings was excellent throughout and I thought had a really good game, he made a couple of thundering last ditch tackles and both Mings and Luiz made crucial interceptions in what wasn't a bad defensive display. I thought Coutinho did his best to try to drag us back into it in the second half - but beyond those three it was mediocre at best.

Our fullbacks are okay, but we play a system that is utterly reliant on them being better than okay - they carried very little threat today and that threat is now their main role - I'm looking for a lot more from both of them. The crossing from both Cash and Digne was terrible.

Watkins (admittedly not helped by the referee) couldn't hold the ball up and didn't seem able to deal with Newcastle's physicality, I feel for him a little because he's being forced into having to play almost the entire game with his back to goal - we don't seem to get into the sort of positions where we might play a central through ball.

Ramsey struggled to find a way into it barring a couple of late runs, Chambers was okay and all things considered he did a decent job as did Buendia - put those three in the so-so column.

Martinez was poor, setting the wall badly for the goal and then almost making a colossal cock up with Mings when he was coming for a ball he was never ever going to get - he's well off his best form.

But the worrying one again for me was McGinn, the tackling was there (although after his booking he made one pretty unwise one which the ref let go), he can still hold a player off, but he stopped running a couple of weeks ago, he can't track wingers and he doesn't seem to have the energy to support attacks and we really need him to be up and down the pitch - he's a shadow of the John McGinn we expect and I don't know why, maybe there's an injury or something, I love him to bits, but at the moment he needs dropping.

Ings and Bailey both look like they haven't played for three years and Chukwuemeka didn't really get into things - none of the substitutions changed the mood.

Individuals aren't the problem though - we have a system, we've brought in players that fit that system, and that system isn't working. That's the worry. Where we might have expected to be poor was at the back, but we weren't, we defended pretty well today - it was our general play and everything in the opposition half that was lacking in ideas and movement and shape. In a way I hope that's on the individuals, that it's on the performance, because if it's not, then our manager will need to rip up the tactical plan that's got him to where he is in his career and start again from scratch and that's a much more serious undertaking.

In the Leazes Stand, the support started brightly enough, but the atmosphere died somewhere in the first half performance and by the end it had deteriorated to all being the fault of Douglas Luiz and Tyrone Mings, who got told to "f*** off" by a handful of fans when at the end of a good personal performance he came to applaud the support at the final whistle. i despair sometimes.

It wasn't a good game, there were lots of interruptions and both sides were sloppy. Newcastle will play better and lose, but fair play to them, they took their chance and it is three really big points for them, I'm sure all of the nine hundred fans who had their birthday's read out at half time will go home happy.

For us, it's worrying and the manager needs to have a serious look at figuring out what isn't working. I heard someone on the way out say that the honeymoon was over for Steven Gerrard and I think that's probably right; the hard work starts now and we'll need to be a lot better than this if he and we are to progress.

I genuinely can’t tell if people are serious or  on a windup. A large part of our fan base always embarrass themselves after a loss but the reaction today has been something else.

We did beat Brentford and FC Molde in a couple of friendlies. Credit where it's due.😀

Yep we are pissed off with the weak performance today, the loss of a two goal lead against Leeds and the results of the last couple of months…I’m not sure we are the ones with the wrong reaction.

Don't forget their keeper holding his big toe while half the Newcastle side ran to Eddie Howe to be told how to play football.
