I think it's weird but it was well documented they'd worked together before and knew each other and Purslow was the man pushing for Gerrard. Purslow and his family are from Merseyside and huge Liverpool fans. CP always had a season ticket at Anfield. Gerrard, as a club icon, is not surprisingly Purslow’s idol. He thinks Gerrard is an incredible personality and destined for great things. What Gerrard thinks about it I don’t know, but having Purslow as an admirer can of course be beneficial career wise. Coutinho was dropped last season against Burnley so it is not beyond the realms of possibility. I think we should certainly be looking at using him sparingly, perhaps more at home than away. Gerrard as a rookie manager is trying to assert himself and nail his colours to the mast, there will be casualties along the way. Not that I agree with them but again we have to hope it is for the best and he knows what he is doing. There are many who are jumping on our opening day defeat as "I told you so" yet the season is long and Arsenal were in a similar predicament for a few matches at the beginning of last season yet they sorted it out. Let us hope we can achieve something similar rather than just wishing Gerrard gets the sack or making our mind up too soon. As I say he isn't going anywhere just yet. I want Gerrard to be a success because it means Villa are a success but while some focus that it was day one, for a lot of us it’s just continuation of last season. He has been give everything he has asked for in the transfer market, in which he changed from recruiting young players with sell-on potential, to proven individuals and paying them the highest contract they are ever likely to receive. He replaced Targett, added Coutinho, when we had a similar player in Buendia, and completely sidelined Sanson and Traore. Add to this the messy business of switching the captaincy, the poor way in which the CC business was handled, and senior players training with the U21's. Admittedly, we got 20M from Chelsea, but that was more fortune than planning. Chelsea are throwing money around at the moment. It all seems a little too much about 'Me' with Gerard. That cohesiveness and dynamic that seemed to be there between backroom staff, players, etc. just doesn't seem to be there now. And let's be honest, that link to the fans has just disappeared. It was always going to be different with Smith leaving, but it's now non-existent. I didn't want Smith to go at the time, but I hoped that Gerrard would improve results after being appointed. The problem now is that I'm really starting to dislike the guy. My club seems to be in a worse place now than it was 12 months ago. I do think we have better in us both individually and collectively than we showed yesterday. foreveryoung Posted August 7, 2022 Share Posted August 7, 2022 When he came in, I didn't really think of his past much, I just thought what a player he was, an that he had big potential as a manager taking rangers to the title. He also talked a good game with a top coach at hand in Beale. Well with Beale looking like a bit of a fraud at his new club, Gerrard is starting to look like the scouse, arrogant, ex Liverpool player I didn't want to remember.
