This is almost worse than people on here saying they can't watch Pete's videos because his accent "makes it hard to take him seriously". Football is a global sport now and from what I hear, it's a lot easier to watch the Premier League on TV outside of the UK than it is inside it. If you don't like Villa growing into a global brand, too bad. It's 2023 and the club will only continue to grow around the world with Emery/NSWE in charge of the club. If his podcast isn't your thing, fine. No need to insult other Villa supporters because they weren't born/raised/live in Birmingham. I understand your frustration, but I don't think it's necessarily gatekeeping or comes from a place of nastiness. Football podcasts rely on the listeners accepting the presenters as experts worth listening to - that will always be hard for those of us who attend regularly when considering someone who has just attended their first game. Football is a global sport, but the globalisation of English football is not universally seen as a good thing, and that's a fully legitimate position IMO
Captain_Townsend
Well if Villa want to progress they are going to have to become more global. Villa always had a following outside the UK, from Ireland to North America, Australia, Africa. I am afraid that a more inward looking Villa only leads to stagnation and decline. Missing the point just a bit - yes of course we have and yes we will, but that doesn't mean anyone has to like the globalisation of football overall, and has little to do with people choosing not to listen to a podcast by a guy who has just attended his first game
leemond2008
What I want to know is just how much money he got for this trip, originally it was him and his producer, then the producer couldn't make it so he took his wife, in the latest video he's talking to some dude who says "its been a pleasure to host you, your wife Sandra and all of your friends" I know he had a sponsor for the trip but they must have gave him a fair whack for a brief mention in one of his videos. A good portion of the active users on Villa Talk are not from the UK and it's extremely insulting to those of us who also religiously follow this club. You may as well tell the rest of us that our voices/opinions don't matter because we live somewhere outside of the UK. Like I said, I don't care if you listen to his podcast or not, but saying you don't listen to it only because he's just gone to his first match makes you look like a xenophobic knob. One could argue that watching the games on TV, with multiple camera angles and slow motion replays etc, gives the viewer an advantage over someone siitting in the upper back corner of the North Stand, for example. Quote I find it difficult to watch a Villa podcast run by a guy who has only just attended his first Villa match. Much rather watch UTV or Claret & Blue. I find that hard to take any other way than: "You've never been here, so you don't get it". Which irks, since I've never been to Villa Park - and, likely, I never will. Something I share in common with a LOT of posters here. 2

It doesn't then follow that he believes all non-UK based Villa fans should sit down, be quiet and avoid having any opinion on the club or football in general - if he did, he'd be really unlikely to be posting on VT. A matter of personal taste doesn't equate xenophobia. As I said in my initial post, I can understand the frustration with the point being expressed, but I also don't think the opinion expressed by the initial poster is an unreasonable or hateful one either. I can see both sides basically.

I would say, I don't think it matters *at all*. What matters, to me: is the content insightful? educational? entertaining? I'm sure there are lots of fans who have attended tons of games at VP who, for a multitude of reasons, would very much *not* be worth hearing from. If that is just a matter of personal taste, okay. tinker Posted April 12, 2023 VT Supporter Share Posted April 12, 2023 He's a fan who has seen a gap in the market and filled it. YouTube content on the villa is sadly lacking and its an opportunity for fans to fill it with content, if they dont then others will, even if they are not villa fans. Noticed a vlogger for forest had his highest viewing figures for the villa fixture, people make money from these vloggs, it's a highly targeted audience. If you don't like it then start your own or shut up. 2

Everybody's opinion is just as valuable whether they've been to a villa game or just watched them on TV. I have watched the podcast a couple of times but didn't think much of it, so I will just leave it at that.

Anyone's choice of which media to consume is a matter of personal taste, ultimately. For the match going fan, it's not beyond the realm of possibility that they look for all of the above but prefer that to be delivered by someone who was physically at the game, so they can also discuss the atmosphere, away fans, match day experience, transport issues, half-time queue for a balti pie etc., as ultimately that is going to be more relatable. I just think it's a bit of a jump to suggest anyone with that opinion is being xenophobic. FWIW I think 95% of fan vlogs/podcasts are cringe-inducing shite, this one included

Popular Post sidcow Posted April 12, 2023 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted April 12, 2023 (edited) I watch The Holy Trinity show and enjoy it. For the most part I think he gets it right and gives good insight. Occasionally he talks (in my opinion) some bollocks but then I don't think I've ever met another football fan who doesn't at times. Indeed, there are several people on here who appear to go to Villa Park regularly who never really warmed to Dean and thought Gerrard needed more time and a massive exodus of our cowardly players. How they could get it so wrong despite being there every week is beyond me.
Kiwivillan
I listen to every Villa podcast I can find. Luke from UTV podcast grated on me at first but now he's grown on me. I watch Holy Trinity sometimes but annoying not on my Player FM podcast app which is where most of the Villa podcasts are on. I prefer listening on way to work than watching YouTube video. I'm in the any content is good content camp Edited April 12, 2023 by Kiwivillan
