Premier League terminate largest overseas TV deal in £523million financial blow to clubs

The Chinese streaming service PPTV paid £523million for a three-year deal in 2016, but failed to make their first payment of £160million back in March and six months later have still yet to pay the Premier League

The Premier League have terminated its largest overseas TV contract with the Chinese streaming service, PPTV.

PPTV finalised a £523million for the rights to stream all 380 Premier League games per season in China, for the three years between 2019-22.

But they failed to make their first payment, of £160million, to the Premier League back in March.

Six months down the line, that money has still not been paid.

The Premier League confirmed on Thursday, in a short statement posted on social media: “The Premier League confirms that it has today terminated its agreements for Premier League coverage in China with its licensee in that territory.

“The Premier League will not be commenting further on the matter at this stage.”

Did Tony Xia arrange this deal?

:D

Probably refusing to pay since Britain don't want to use Huawei anymore. Putting pressure.

Wonder if China will do like the Saudi's and just pirate the PL.

With all the players we've linked to the last 3 days, and our current squad. We gotta be 3rd favourites for relegation after Fulham and WBA.

Villa just don't have the pulling power no more. Players will choose London over Villa instantly. I guess it's just the sign of the times, Villa aren't fashionable no more .

Players we've been linked to haven't got anything to do with anything, we can judge better on that once the transfer window closes.

But has it stands, it's hard to see three clubs that we're likely to finish above, oursevles, Albion and Fulham clear favourites for relegation. Then again I doubt many would have predicted Watford and Bournemouth to go down before last season, but really we need to be aiming for midtable rather than being a club that has to rely on other teams failing.

not good news is it. More financial uncertainty. Really really hope our owners are in this for the long haul!

It may well pave the way for The PL marketing it's own rights and going down the Internet route.  Some guy posted something on here recently about it would something like quadruple the earnings if they cut out the traditional TV broadcasters.
