Both Georgia races have not happened yet (or to be more accurate, there's a new election for each in January because none of the candidates in either race reached 50% of the vote). Dems need to win both races (I expect them to lose both). While counting has not finished in either Alaska or North Carolina, the Dem challenger in NC has conceded, and the candidate in Alaska is too far behind at this point to catch up. So Biden is screwed then. I don't understand American politics. He's won but won't be able to get anything through without Republicans agreeing? What's the point? He's won but won't be able to get anything through without Republicans agreeing? What's the point? I mean, I share your perspective that it's shit, to be honest. The history of it is that it didn't used to matter, because the Senate often used to pass legislation on a biprtisan or semi-bipartisan basis. Unfortunately, it now runs exactly like our Parliament in how party-line votes are, but without clear winners and with different parts of the system having mandates. It's worth saying that there is still quite a lot Biden can do without passing legislation, through executive actions, and forcing parts of the executive branch to uphold or not uphold particular laws and regulations etc, so it's not completely powerless. It certainly does mean he won't be able to transform the country, but then again he's so moderate he probably wouldn't have pursued much transformative legislation anyway. But yeah, I don't want to get too hard into defending it, because I also think it's a shit system.

LondonLax
Biden has also been known for doing deals with Republicans (the dirty centralist) so whilst he’s not going to get any of Bernie Sanders agenda through he could still get some compromises passed in the Senate. He's won but won't be able to get anything through without Republicans agreeing? What's the point? Not really it depends on who wins the two Georgia runoffs. If the Dems win the Georgia runoffs, they have effective control of the Senate as it would be 50 seats each and in the event of a tie on votes, The VP (Harris) gets a casting vote In one of the battles you have Perdue vs Ossoff which produced This Debate (Youtube) Now it's possible that Perdue has fallen in peoples estimation since then Another factor here is donations. The Dems have already started raising money and were up to £4mil even last week. Meanwhile Trump is currently sucking up a lot of the GOP donations right now with his legal battles to get him nowhere, he may actually be costing the GOP control of the Senate if it carries on much longer But then you can add into the mix that Americans will quite often try and vote so one party controls the Senate and the other controls the House because they essentially like Governments to do nothing. It's going to be interesting If I was a betting man, my money might be on Ossoff winning for the Dems but the Republican winning the other race

He's won but won't be able to get anything through without Republicans agreeing? What's the point? To be fair it's a system that's shared in many countries (probably not as partisan as the US but still). For example in the Scandinavian states you've got the government having to run things through the Parliament in a much higher degree than in the UK. I'd say that our system has a habit of being much easier for a party to ruin (hey Conservatives!) than many other countries. The senate is there to check the power of the president, the house is there to check the power of the senate. We've got a second house that never shows up and offers no real input in our policy-making except for that one time with the Brexit issue. If the US had a few more credible parties I'd say that their system would be a much better system than ours as each party would have to form alliances and actually look at each policy in much greater detail to get them through the house\senate. Biden can do quite a lot with presidential orders, and this'll hopefully show all the people who think he's a Russian socialist that he's not so the Dems can swing some more red states for the senate.
The Fun Factory
Apparently Trump will move to a position of not actually contesting the result as they haven't got a leg to stand on, but will not officially concede. Its a national embarrassment. Edited November 12, 2020 by The Fun Factory
