This is an enormous social group that has one of the lowest education levels in the country. I saw two videos that purported to show the incident, but clearly weren't. This is why I take very few people at their word with stuff like this even if it is a close friend! I get that she’s one of these right wing ‘celebrity’ types that needs to think of something every day to shock people to keep her name in circulation, but racist piss splash zones really is quite the specialist subject to claim any expertise on. Experience of some of these guys suggests that they are actually more likely to be 'petit bourgeoisie' in their class profile, than genuinely working class. For example, the man whose house Emily Thornberry notoriously took a picture of was a self-employed car dealer, and I would suggest that a lot of these guys will fit something like his profile (self-employed, live outside London due to white flight in an earlier generation, read The Sun, etc). Particularly in the south of England, the shrinking of the manufacturing sector has meant that a majority of genuinely working class people are BAME and/or female. That might be less true for guys coming in via train from the North, to be fair. It might be; you could very well argue he died during the 'War on Terror'. In which case, the distinction between pissing next to his memorial versus pissing on it might be the difference between a police caution and a decade in prison in the near future. We will need the expertise of the Hartley-Brewer's to help us in this brave new world. For instance, one important question is what length of prison sentence should be received by somebody pissing next to a memorial, but where the camber of the paving slabs directs the trickle of urine into contact with the memorial. Whether on it or adjacent to it there’s a blatant disregard for it being there. Even if it was innocent in that he just genuinely needed to piss really badly, and we’ve all been there, he could easily have chosen to go a few steps away from it which wouldn’t have allowed for the picture opportunity.
