Reckons Carroll has been out of form for most of the last two years, and is shockingly weak on the ball. He pissed himself laughing when we signed Neil Taylor as well. We needed a decent defensive midfielder, and we got somebody who is going to be even worse than Hourihane at doing that. Looking online, most Swansea fans are unhappy that they've let players go without replacing them, but none of them seem very sorry at all to see Carroll leave. As ever, I suppose we'll see in due course. Think we can forget any ideas of promotion under Smith though. Mazrim
Yeah, lets not pretend Hourihane is an all action maestro all of a sudden. 96% of the time I forget he's on the pitch. Carroll isn't what I would have gone for personally but I would have no qualms throwing him in instead of Hourihane at the moment. Bear in mind that Swansea fans still point at aircraft and black people in amazement. 1

It's pretty obvious we are buying players we think is right for a different kind of football. We've moved on from hoofball to something slightly more modern. Thus we need different players. I am well pleased we didn't sign anymore cloggers. And while Abraham will probably leave, there's nothing certain about Grealish or McGinn leaving. Unless you know stuff we don't. Surely it's better that we do this the right way, carefully, and get in players we think can do a job, instead of buying for the sake of buying. If we're ever gonna implement a new style of football and develop this club towards a better future with better financial standing, it would always involve losses, bad patches, and transfer windows with a bit of moderation. Give me Carroll on the pitch any day over Bananason, Whelan, Jedinak or Lansbury, that's for sure.

Buying the awful Tom Carroll in anticipation of next year won't look so clever when we're having to replace Tammy, Grealish and McGinn. That is exactly what we have done since the moment we got relegated. Gone all in on promotion with no forethought to where that leaves us if we don't go up. That approach has left us with one of the oldest squads in the division, the biggest wage bill and apparently losing 4 million pound a month. It hasn't worked and we can't go on like that. Surely the fact the club came so close to going to the wall last summer should mean we are all on board with no longer thinking short term and a shit or bust approach. We are having to cut our cloth to suit and finally for the first time since relegation live with in our means. It hasn't been a great window but it was never going to be. We improved the keeper situation, we signed a promising right back but I'd imagine due to financial constraints had to loan him back until the summer and have brought in 3 others on loan, two with options to buy. All the outfield players under the age of 27 and all you'd like to think either hungry to improve and play at a higher level than this or approaching their prime. The dynamic of our squad is heavily balanced towards players way past their best and Aston Villa in the championship being as good as it gets for them. You can't change that overnight, especially given our financial constraints, but this window we have made a start. With Hutton, Richards, Whelan, Jedinak, Adomah all out of contract come June and I'd imagine us trying to move on the likes of Elmo, Bjarnason, Elphick we should have more leeway in the summer but don't expect us to be signing players on 40k plus a week. Those days are gone and we are shopping in a different market. This sustainable approach doesn't mean we have to throw the towel in on promotion though. Far from it. The likes of Huddersfield, Bournemouth, Burnley,, Cardiff, Brighton have all shown in recent years you can get out of this division without spending a fortune and this season Leeds, Sheff Utd and Norwich are currently top 3 paying a fraction of what we do in wages. We as fans though have to accept the days of revolution and big money quick fixes are gone and we are going to have to evolve and take a more long term view. We'd be knee deep in them if we hadn't lost Grealish against WBA, so hopefully with these additions and getting and keeping Jack fit we can get back as we were. It would be insane of the management team to sign nobody if there are players who can improve us now, and, in fact, both Mings and Carroll have buy options of various degrees, so there is that too. Tom Carroll is better than anyone else we could play at DM. Our first team back in November, with Jack and Tuanzebe, was a match for anyone. We have Mings, Kalinic (settling) and Carroll—er and Hause—who have rebalanced the squad to a decent degree. If we get into the playoffs we have a good shot at going up. Game on. How can you say with a straight face that we are still aiming for POs? Particularly after that window? POs went after Smith played for the draw against Stoke at Home. Can’t even see us finishing top half with the attitude the club has. Its us that should be receiving a fee for the business we’ve done in this window as all we are doing is leasing out our physio room.

I actually think the 'we need a defensive midfielder' argument is a myth. We have two defensive in midfielder's in Whelan and Jedinak, both aren't what we need. What we need is a 3 man midfield that can work together to control a game and retain possesion. Yes one of them sits in a deeper role, but that is more to do with dictating the play rather than breaking it up. Hourihane has proved he can do this, but he's a lot better at doing it with a strong midfield in front of him (McGinn and Grealish together). Whether Carroll will take Hourihane's role and let him push further forward or sit in whilst Grealish is out remains to be seen.

Hause is on the bench each week and must be near full fitness. Kalinic has played every game since coming in. Obviously we are aiming for the playoffs, but we also have one eye on next season and not trying to piss all our money down the drain as we have done for the last 10 years. Honestly think some of our fans are still in denial of where we are as a football club.
limvillian
Probably 5 key spots on the team needed addressing GK, LB,RB,CB and CDM . We addressed 2 of them in GK and CB. Weakened RB and weakened our wingers also as we replaced an inconsistent Bolasie with a constantly injured Green. Keeping Tammy was certainly our best business. On the contrary, I know exactly where we are and have accepted that we are stuck down here with the dross for a long, long time. If you think that we are aiming for POs then you are completely and utterly deluded. No chance whatsoever with the playing squad we have. We have 2 good players - Tammy and McGinn - and beyond that the rest are bottom half of Championship / League 1 standard that are lazy, unfit and physically pathetic. I really do wonder whether we should just accept that we are complete garbage and never going up. Takes the pressure off and we can actually enjoy going to games. Mazrim
We have 2 players who can play left back. Mings especially has excelled at that position in this division before. I know Smith said he's been brought in to play centre half mainly, but he will be considering him for left back too, along with Hause. Yes, we should have got a specialist in and yes, Taylor makes baby Jesus cry tears of blood lately, but there are at least alternatives now. I dont get the right back situation but at least Hutton and Elmo wont be an issue next season.

This reads as if it was from the Steve Bruce 'Short-Termism' playbook. In case you haven't noticed by now, the approach you're outlining hasn't worked, and we have increasingly harsh financial constraints. Also, everyone was poor at that Swansea side last season, including Abraham, I genuinely wouldn't put too much stock in what one Swansea fan has to say.
