Breaking | Aston Villa are signing Frédéric Guilbert from Caen for €5m, but will loan him back until the end of the season

Our reliable colleague Mohamed Toubache-TER is reporting that French full-back Frédéric Guilbert is currently undergoing a medical with Championship side Aston Villa, who will loan the player back to Caen until the end of the season.

The deal will cost Villa €5m plus €1.5m in bonuses and a sell-on percentage fee clause will be included in the deal. Guilbert will sign a 4.5 year contract with Villa should the medical go to plan.

Why would we do that?

We need a RB to play not send back on loan.

- Has been identified as part of long term plans and secures his signature now before potential rivals in Summer.

- Caen may have only allowed him to go now if he was loaned back for rest of the season. They are in a relegation battle, they would not want to let him go just yet. (And if we tried to get him cheaper in Summer if they did get relegation, we would face competition).

- Transfer fee can be spread across this window along with future ones.

I'm just a bit surprised as we don't know for sure which division we will be in.  I guess it would be handy to have someone already lined up knowing we have a lot of players to replace in the summer.

Should have been Elmohamedy first?

(Unless we are keeping him for when Bruce comes knocking?)

While Bruce is employed somewhere, there's always the likelihood of us selling him.

With the little money we are aloowe to spend this sounds stupid of true.

Why does it sound stupid? Hutton will be gone in the summer and you'd expect Elmo to be moved on too. Transfers are paid in instalments anyway so it won't cost us a great deal now. Makes sense to me tbh.
