PieFacE Posted July 26, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted July 26, 2018 There's been quite a lot of discussion about our current tactics, especially surrounding the fact that we've just started to trial a 3-5-2 formation. Personally I think it's a terrible idea for our current set of players and I feel we're wasting time trying to use it in pre-season, I can't help but feel within a game or two we will be abandoning it and trying something different. With the current set of players we have, and assuming everyone is fit, what formation would you play? I'd go for a 4-3-3 with the following. Steer Elmo - Sulliman - Chester Hutton Thor Hourihane - Grealish Green Albert Davis When out of possesion i'd keep the formation really rigid like the above, however when it possession I'd give Grealish license to roam forward and get the wingers bombing forward whilst staying close to the touchline to open up space across the pitch. Davis has the ability to bring other into play even though he doesn't score much, I feel it's the most balanced side.

Popular Post rbcuk
I know one that will be used is, throw on all the strikers when we’re losing so have no midfield cause of that 2 1
villa89
It's okay the manager doesn't believe in them so we won't have any.

Guest
I like the formation Bruce used (with wingbacks) but we don't have the right players. We need a central defender who is happy to push up into midfield and pass the pall well (Terry?), we need wing backs with good pace and awareness of position, we need a decent box to box midfielder (maybe Hourihane?) and a striker who works hard for 90 mins

Popular Post villaglint
Well worthy of a new thread PieFace. I'd agree in that I've never been a big fan of the three at the back. It's obviously all in favour at the moment because of the success Conte had with it however I've very rarely seen it played well outside of a few teams. It requires very good full backs which we don't have. It also seems to be an attempt to push Jack further up the pitch. I get that you want our best player to spend more time in areas of the pitch where he can hurt the opponent and Jack has always looked like a 10 so I do understand the thinking. However in 4 seasons of senior football the only time we've seen a consistent spell of good form from him is when playing as a box to box midfielder. When you seem him play these days it kind of makes sense. He's never really been a player who is consistently feeding the striker with through balls or delivering consistent assists. What he is really good at is breaking the lines, find good key passes to the wide players and generally being very economical with the ball to help you dominate a game. He did that time and again last season so I dont think it's going too far to say that box to box is his best position. If you want to build a team around him play him in his best position and find two of the fastest wingers you can. Jack will get them in time and time again. I should add that I'm not against trying the 3 at the back. Pre season seems as good a time as any to experiment. But given we've played it in almost every game it feels less and less like its an experiment and given we've got no CBs or wing backs suited to the role its starting to feel a bit miss guided.
Zatman
We have trialled 3 at the back so many times its super negative at this level and shows little faith in our defenders
HongKongVillan Posted July 26, 2018 VT Supporter Share Posted July 26, 2018 You play to your players strength and at the moment 352 or 532 aren't the answer (yet). Our defence just isn't composed enough

It's such a different system to four at the back that it's difficult for players to just switch between the two. Some players might not be able to play in one of the systems at all. So in a way we're going about it the right way this time. Using it in pre-season games and (I assume) drilling it into them in training so that we're ready for the new season. On the other hand, we don't appear to have the right personnel to implement it so that bit is a bit baffling at the moment. I haven't watched any pre-season games so can't really comment on it, but I'm a little wary.

Hes pretty much perfect for it. The wing backs should be elmo and RDL, both have pace and carry attacking threats The striker has to be Davis as he needs to hold the ball and be dangerous from crosses. Hopefully he can grow into the role but he has the right ingredients. We do have the personnel, we just need to try them in the correct positions! AvfcRigo82
Surely you need players to have a formation? Not sure it's tactics I would be worried about but more of getting a few players sold or moved on and a few loans inwards first then worry about tactics.
