Que?

The Beckham freekick against Greece was in the qualifiers so wouldn't have had any influence on the route to the final.

We played Sweden, Argentina and Nigeria in the group stages of the tournament, drawing with both Sweden and Nigeria but somehow beating Argentina (Michael Owen dive in the box, Beckham scuffed penalty)

We then dicked Denmark 3-1 before facing Brazil where as pointed out, Beckham bottled a challenge leading to the equaliser on half time and that Ronaldinho 'did-he-mean-it' free-kick.

Umm, yes it would have had an influence on the route to the final.

That freekick meant England qualified automatically ahead of Germany. As a result, Germany played a qualifier against Ukraine, after winning that they got drawn into a group consisting of Saudi Arabia, Camaroon and Ireland, and then had to play Paraguay, US and South Korea on route to the final.

The World Cup draw is seeded regardless of how you qualify. Germany were a Pot A team, we were a Pot B team. We could not possibly be in the same group as Ireland, so we wouldn't have basically just replaced Germany like for like.

To be fair, I thought Gazza explained it pretty well in that programme.

He thought the keeper was going to get a touch so he held back ever so slightly. Then when the keeper failed to touch it, he wasn't expecting it, so couldn't stretch quick enough.

If he hadn't made that assumption then he'd have scored.

What I always forget about that game, is it was golden goal so that literally would have been it if he had scored.

He did explain it very well. But as a fan I still think how it didn't go in.

To be honest, Spain didn't just outplay England they were point blank robbed. They had two legitimate goals incorrectly ruled out, it was utterly scandalous, on some Korea 2002 level shit.

It always make me smile how El Tel is highly regarded as an England manager (by some) based solely on the 5 competitive games at Euro '96.

A fairly humdrum draw against the Swiss.
A slightly fortuitous win against the Scots (Uri Geller to the rescue ;)).
A great performance against the Netherlands. No argument there, it was great.
A lot of luck against Spain as already mentioned.
A heroic, heart breaking defeat against a very good German side.

So what does leave us with? Two great performances (one ending in defeat) and throw in a bit of Gazza magic for good measure.

Having said all that, it was a great tournament though.

Anyone see that hotel complex he lives in Spain now on the Shearer 96 programme?

Didn't realise managers were paid that well in the 90s....;)

The only pay slip El Tel received was a brown envelope.

Scuffed penalty?
Come on, that was an absolute rocket ( at least in my memory)

One of my favourite memories that penalty, the power, the celebration, the passion.

Those Adidas Predator boots were stunning too.

It certainly wasn't a scuff.

It wasn't a particularly good penalty, imo, but to call it a scuff is remembering it wrongly, at best!

No, it didn't. It went to the side of him. But only about a foot to the side of him. If he'd been going in that direction it would have been an easy save. Luckily his weight was shifted to the other side so he couldn't stop it.

Talksport (so probably nonsense) are reporting that information from the England camp suggests Rooney will play behind Kane, Vardy not starting.

Not starting Vardy would be a mistake imo.

It is probably the way Roy will go... Definitely not the right choice but will we be surprised with Roy keeping Rooney in?

Alleged team leak from the other day was:

                    Hart

Walker  Cahill  Smalling  Rose

                   Dier

            Rooney  Alli

Lallana                     Wilshere

                   Kane

Terrible team so it's probably the way he'll go.
